Bring back Granlund

Created by: EccE
Team: 2020-21 Minnesota Wild
Initial Creation Date: Dec. 10, 2020
Published: Dec. 10, 2020
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
Zuccarello got surgery done on his hand and will be sidelined for the foreseeable future. Our depth at RW at the moment is Kaprizov and..... that's it. There's only Kaprizov, a rookie, who can play top-6-minutes reliably. This is where Granlund comes in, and for a few reasons:

1) The deal will be cheap because Minnesota is one of the few teams that have the interest to add anymore in this offseason. If Granny wants to play next season, he'll have to accept a short-term, underpaying contract. This brings us to...
2) The contract would be super-cheap and we wouldn't have to commit to it long-term. Worst case scenario: Granny plays for us this year and hits the market again next summer. Even if Zuccarello comes back, we would have enough cap space for Granlund.
3) The fans would lose their minds. Too bad we can't be on the stands celebrating one of the most loved members in the history of our team coming back.
4) The unwritten "you can't return to a team you've been traded away from" rule does not apply. Since Granny left, we have gotten a new GM, a new head coach and have traded/not extended Zucker, Koivu and Staal - a huge part of our former core. The team is not the same anymore.
5) Fiala and Granlund on the same line would annoy the heck out of Nashville-fans. And I would love every second of it.

I love that Granny had his best years in Minny!

Point #5 alone is enough to sell me on it

He can play both. If we play Fiala in RW, it leaves a huge hole in our LW, so we need Granny anyway. Also I wanted to place him on the same line with Granlund.

No thanks on Granny. Hartman, Fiala, Bjugstad, Kaprizov, MarJo, Foligno have all played RW.

Even with Zucc out (not a big loss imo) MN still has enough FWDs, it even opens up a spot for Rossi to get a cup of coffee at wing

I doubt Rossi ever sees the wing, let alone a full season with the team. I wouldn’t be surprised to see MoJo shift to the wing, bump Bonino and Ek top 6 and get Rask his games for expansion purposes. Like you said, it’s not the worst loss in the world, but it still hurts.

Rossi is 19 and played 0 games against high level competition (no, I don't count the Swiss league as high level competition), put him on the wing for 9 games then send him back to the CHL/Swiss league.

It's been awhile since MN had a high CHL prospect (Dumba), but giving them 9 games is a pretty common practice around the league.

Yeah, sorry, meant that he should get his look at the NHL and do just as you suggested by heading back to the Swiss league. But I would say play him top 6 for his time to show him what it takes to be a Center in the NHL. He seems like the type that won’t gain as much through a confidence boost as he will experience doing what we need him to do.

Take it in baby steps. Let him see the speed/physicality of the NHL game in a less demanding position than center. He'll be tripping over himself enough just doing that.

I could get onboard with signing Granlund if and only if the big plan is to try to move him at the TDL for futures.

The last thing this franchise needs right now are more old or aging players blocking young players from opportunities, but if this is a short-term fix with eyes on the future, it makes some sense... The things to weigh here is how much Granlund would improve the team and coincidentally worsen their draft position vs not signing him and maybe drafting higher...and the value the opportunities for the Eks and Greenways, et al have towards the future success of the Wild... That’s a lot to chew on...and a horribly written sentence, sorry!
