A different Tampa trade scenario

Created by: MCfubar
Team: 2020-21 Detroit Red Wings
Initial Creation Date: Dec. 13, 2020
Published: Dec. 13, 2020
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
Tampa is between a rock and a hard place, and there are only a few teams with the capability to take on salary. There have been many rumors floating around with potential trade scenarios between Tampa and Detroit. The latest has Tampa taking on Henrik Zetterberg's contract in exchange for the Wings taking Tyler Johnson with what appears to be an insignificant "sweetener". Its going to cost Tampa more than a "sweetener", since Detroit doesn't need to shed any salary.

Tampa really wants to sign RFAs Cirelli and Cernak, but there is no way this will happen without significant cap relief. Tampa also doesn't want to trade a 1st round pick in any scenario. Brayden Point and Ondrej Palat will also need a new contracts in two years, and those contracts are going to be huge. Tampa could be in the same situation with needing to shed salary again in two years. Something has to give!

Tampa still has to shed salary. You have to know that Zetterberg if he on LTIR is absolutely meaningless in any trade.

Technically having an LTIR contract gives you more cap space

No it doesn't in this scenario. Really this trading of players who are going be on LTIR all season is absolute nonsense....doesn't help the cap situation at all (in this case Tampa)

Why do I keep reading this from ACGMs? Having LTIR does NOT increase the salary cap for a team!!

Here’s a visual aid I made for this exact scenario, LTIR doesn’t grant “additional” cap space.

LTIR is the new insanely low offer sheet for ACGMs. LTIR is confusing for people new to the concept, I know I was, but it does absolutely nothing for a team trying to generate cap space by trading for the player.

So, if the Lightning signed everyone and was at a $87 million cap hit, they could put Stamkos on LTIR and be cap compliant with an allowance to exceed the cap by a certain amount. They couldn't take on another contract to generate cap space as that contract would also count against the cap.
