which stats are you referring to?

well, most of them. He doesn't look to be the best puck mover, which is strange bc he has so many points. He does look like he's a solid powerplay guy, but that wouldn't really help us bc we already have a log jam on the PP. He'd help on the PK but at that point, a $5M PK guy... idk

he's good at even strength, defensively, but not radically better than any of our three (save for rielly)

idk if I'd call him a #1 D, more so that he's just finding amazing success under trotz with his system and that style of team - he might not fit here if he came to the leafs

just some defensive stats

some overall numbers

numbers don't tell everything, but I maintain that the leafs kinda wouldn't need him. Our 1,2,3 of muzz/brodie/rielly are pretty good, esp if rielly can stay healthy. Holl is my only concern and Pulock would be a little overkill, esp at his cap hit

I'm surprised his numbers don't look that good (for some specific stats), I thought he was a lot better. Maybe it's just from being in Trotz's system?? It's strange, cause he IS good.

I think its a combination on playing against the other teams best offensive and defensive talent while playing on a team with below average offensive talent. I think on the Leafs a lot of those offensive metrics would drastically improve. I the islanders have been the top 5 for least goals allowed for the past two years I believe and Pulock is a big part of that

No, of course not. There have been like forty 60 goal seasons ever. Only two since the year 2000 if I'm not mistaken; it's not sustainable. But for the remainder of Matthews' contract at least, in any given (full) season, it's well within the realm of possibility that he hits that mark.

Yes I can agree with that

yeah, that's true.

i just dk if I'd want pulock at 2 years who might walk then we'd just have barzal, who isn't matthews. Matthews is still growing and developing and his ceiling is just too high, idk if I would ever trade him

His best season overall was the year before trotz became head coach. He's not an elite puck mover, his shot is the reason why his GF/60 so high. He increases the rate at which his team scores goals better than 96% of the league. 2nd among all D in GAR, and led the isles in WAR. I'd say that's worthy of being labeled a #1 D. His CF% is due to trotz system and how hes deployed.

Pulock isn't better than Rielly or Muzzin, but hes better than Brodie. If you look at Brodies previous two years , his numbers weren't as good, especially offensively. Maybe Giordano boosted his numbers or he just had a great year. Still a solid #2, well see how he performs next to Rielly/muzzin

The year before trotz became HC, his XGF was higher because he was allowed to take risks - hes found ways to adapt but trotz system stifles him in terms of play driving.

Microstats are a decent tool, but there are a lot of players that look great when you look at their micro stats (Nick Leddy, for example) but it doesn't always lead to production.

barzal had 4.0 WAR his rookie season, top 10 forward in the league that year. Since trotz joined the isles the highest hes had is 1.7. He's still extremely valuable to the isles, but trotz system stifles creative players.

Cool. Neat agm here. Very underrated element:

Matthews UFA 4
Barzal RFA 3

Sure Barzal will insist on a 10×15 type deal at that point but only a small % of FAs sign with previous team and NYI in 2023 won't be a great situation

barzal will most likely get a 2 year bridge and then sign a long term deal.

I mean he was on pace for 56 goals this year, he can certainly score 60 in a full 82 game season.

Yeah with this his relatively low TOI so far in his career too he's easily a 60 goal scorer for sure

Maybe he COULD score 60. But there’s a difference between scoring 60 goals and being a “60 goal scorer”. Even Ovi isn’t a “60 goal scorer” though he’s scored 65 once. He’s a perennial 50+ goal guy

Now Marge, let's not *could* this fella to death

Leaf fan here 🙋🏻‍♂️

I’d make this trade. Only real reservation is, given the JT-fuelled rivalry between these teams, are these players even play with playing with JT/staying in Toronto? I’m not so sure. Then again, I’m not sure Matthews is staying either, so 🤷🏻‍♂️
