Marner trade that makes toronto scary

Created by: Bcarlo25
Team: 2020-21 Toronto Maple Leafs
Initial Creation Date: Dec. 14, 2020
Published: Dec. 14, 2020
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
Toronto saves a ton of cap. Florida gets a winger for barkov to hopefully convince him to stick around, toronto gets a guy to be Rielly’s D partner for hopefully five years.

Florida gets a D prospect to replace Ekblad, Toronto gets a better prospect to replace marner, and even out the value. Please, i don’t want to hear anything out of leafland about how Liljegren is a better prospect than Tippett. He isn’t.

Maybe the leafs can find a way to get Hoffman on a one year deal by moving kerfoot?

As a fan of a team typically in the leafs division, this team scares me a heck of a lot more than the current one.

You’re right. I actually did the math and forgot to change it. I still think taking on an extra 4MM over 5 years is worth it for florida. That top line would be one of the best in the league.

Their D would be decimated though. There is only one way that I could see Florida doing it - if they think that Marner will bring in enough additional revenue to more than justify it.

But I just can't see it. Barkov is up in 2 years and having his winger making making just under 11M with a ridiculously front-loaded and bonus laden contract makes it much more difficult to re-sign Barkov for anything reasonable. I don't think that any other team wants Marner's contract under any circumstances.

Not sure how you do math. Marner's total compensation is $49,358,000 left on his contract. Ekblads is $35,000,000, meaning Florida would pay additional cash of $14,358,000 over the next 5 seasons.

From a cap hit perspective, Marner's cap hit is $54,465,000 over the duration of his contract and Ekblads is $37,500,000. Florida taking on over $16M is more cap.

Stop trying to suggest the math is in the Panthers favor.

Well, lets be real, no matter where he signs, barkov is getting more than marner no matter where he signs. Given that florida is a tax friendly market, i think they got get 8x11 done if barkov is having fun ripping it up with two awesome wingers on his line.

"Florida saves a bunch of cash."

No they don't. Florida pays out 4M more in cash - and a lot of that extra dough happens soon. During this regular season Marner is only owed 700K and Ekblad is owed more (2M), but next summer Marner gets a 9.6M signing bonus (compared to Ekblad's 3M) and so on. No way Florida trades for Marner.

Ekblad would be great for Toronto. Getting out of Marner's contract would be great for Toronto. But other teams will be not be looking to take it on.

No Marner's got a lot of his pay through his signing bonus

I see an upside to it. Much like toronto, i feel like florida has been underachieving with their current core group. I think a major shake up would be good for them down the road. I think from a financial perspective, having a top line that is one of the best in the NHL could generate some significant revenue over a kind of boring, half point per game number one d man.

I think that the problem is that we aren't winning... It's more about being a good team rather than having a good 1st line
This trade destroys our defense and there is no way we finish anywhere near the playoffs

The panthers aren’t winning for the next couple years. I would embrace that. I kept thinking they were going to take the next step. They aren’t. The core is flawed.

Which is completely irrelevant to what I said which is that Marner is owed more than 4M in actual cash than Ekblad over the remainder of their contracts (which both end in the summer of 2025) and that Marner is also owed a lot more cash in the near term (like his near 10M bonus next summer) which would make it extremely unlikely that Florida would want anything to do with him.

If you took hockey out of it, and made it a purely fiscal decision, do you not think an argument can be made for the trade? There’s definitely something for the “shiny new toy,” in terms of marketing. Do you sell enough jerseys, tickets, season tickets, ad revenue, concessions to make up an 800K a year difference? I think so. However, perhaps this trade would be better for next off season.

Yes, it is only an 800K per year difference, but next summer it is a 9.6+M bonus for Marner (compared to a 3M bonus for Ekblad). That is a lot money considering that this season teams will probably just be losing a lot of money. I think that next offseason is more reasonable.

Well, lucky for you i just made a version of that.

However, these teams all have very good relationships with banks. They can borrow money to pay a bonus if the contract won’t hurt them financially down the road.

Did i miss something where teams can’t have more than one good young winger? Especially when they play different sides.

Nah I just mean like they both play a similar style. The leafs already have two goal scorers in Matthews and Tavares, and Marner simply is the playmaking forward they need for tose guys, he fits their system so well
