I would say he’d probably generate a 7th, maybe a 6th, and 5th if the Bolts are lucky

it was hard getting to that cap number. brisbois has his work cutout for him.

Yes it takes multiple moves to be cap compliant. Also, there is no need to bury McElhinney. He is a solid backup and I doubt Gibson will be a very good backup. If you want to bury someone, bury Coburn.

they are not my team so I dont know the team as well as my pens. I was trying to have a full compliment of players and maximize the cap. the pens did it with their goalie last year

The problem with 2 year contracts for Cernak and Cirelli is that Point's contract expires at the same time. Point's qualifying offer is going to be 9M (last year of previous deal's salary) and with the way the GM has been doing his deals lately those two will likely have hefty qualifying offers. Sergachev's new deal puts his QO at 7.2M in 3 years. Palat is the only player of significant caphit to go UFA between now and then. If the cap stays flat, They'll be right back where they are now.

that mcdonough contract is a real albatross...are you suggesting dumping Palat too?

Don't really have to dump Palat, they'll just have to decide near the trade deadline of the 21-22 season whether they want to deal him or not. All depends on how their year is going (contending or not). Other then that, let him walk so you can pay Point.

You're close, but Detroit isn't swapping 2nds. Just get rid of the 2nd round picks both ways and you're good.

Yzerman got tampa in this cap mess yet everyone thinks he's one of the best GM's. He bolts (pun intended) for detroit right before he has to sign these guys and now he's gonna benefit from the mess he made in tampa. Now when he makes a trade like the one in this post everyone is gonna say how great a gm he is for robbing his old team. Smh. Good thing tampa got their cup last season cus the lightning are gonna look very different in the next few years just trying to stay under the cap.

Yzerman got the Lightning in this “mess” because he knows how to spot talent and knows what players to draft. I think that he passed out too many NTCs.

Nah they'll be ok under these circumstances for another 2 seasons (this and next). Then they'll have to go right back into making hard decisions. Even with Palat expiring with no deals on Point, Cernak, and Cirelli in two years they'll run right into another cap crunch. Then a year after that they'll have to worry about sergachev extension. They're just gonna have to live from cap crunch to cap crunch.

I'm not saying he's a terrible gm but you can't give every guy that has a decent season a 5 mil+ per year deal and a no trade clause. Yeah he drafts well but that only 1 part of being a gm

Well that is not entirely true.

Kucherov, Palat, Johnson, killorn Hedman and McDonagh were signed by Yzerman. Point, Gourde, Paquette, Sergachev and Vasilevskiy were signed by BB. The Johnson and McDonagh might be bad deals on Yzerman, but like Toronto and other GMs they assumed the cap would go up. Also blaming Yzerman for drafting well, developing talent, trading for better players and then turning around and say that is a bad job, well alot of teams would be so lucky. Did he sign some players for to long or slightly to much, in the case of Johnson and McDonagh sure. Kucherov's deal looks like it is good coming off of an great season. Stamkos deal.was a steal at the time, Hedman is underpaid, Palat is a good signing. He was there to draft Kucherov, Point, Vasilevskiy, Hedman and traded Drouin for Sergachev. From what I see he has done a pretty good job. Can not fault a GM for seeing talent and developing it and then say won't pay you.

I disagree now he did contribute to the mess but JBB signed Vasilevskiy, Point, and Gourde. I agree with littlejerryseinfeld you give a goalie that much money it will end up bitting you in the ass.

Kenneth Holland rewarded Abdelkader (The Pylon) a $29.75M contract because Datsyuk got really good at bouncing pucks off Abby’s backside and into the other team’s net.

It’s not 🤪 All GMs have offered bad contracts. Some more than others.
