Cap fix - read bio

Created by: sens65
Team: 2020-21 Tampa Bay Lightning
Initial Creation Date: Dec. 15, 2020
Published: Dec. 15, 2020
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
The Lightning have a big problem. In order to free up enough cap to stay under the ceiling and keep Cirelli and Cernak they have to trade away around $10 million in salary. The only teams that have the space to take on significant salary are the New Jersey Devils, Los Angeles Kings, Nashville Predators, Ottawa Senators, Detroit Red Wings, Columbus Blue Jackets and Florida Panthers. The players that would seem most likely to be traded are Ondrej Palat, Alex Killorn, Tyler Johnson or Yanni Gourde.

What do all of these players have in common?

They all have either an NTC or NMC or some sort of no-trade clause. They also all have low-to-mid value. Seemingly, the only places they'd want to waive to are contenders as well. Of the seven teams that have cap space only the Predators, Panthers and Blue Jackets are even possible playoff teams. They are instantly the best destinations for Tampa's "cap dumps".

Let me know if the value is good or not in the comments.

NSH really has no interest in that deal or that player

Is the value more or less okay though?

you need more space with no reserves also coburn has NTC. Its tough I spent time trying to put something together. Additionally Columbus still has to sign Dubois.

I honestly have no idea how they're going to manage this. They're running out of time too.

Gourde's contract is for another 5 years, which is a lot for any team to swallow -- especially since he's consistently decline over the past two seasons. He did have a good playoffs, but that is a lot of investment in a player that has not performed to expectations recently. With a flat cap and uncertain revenue, it's a lot to ask for a team to take on a player like that. I'm not sure a team is taking that on without a 1st attached -- but I do like the $500k retention.

Sens65, think your analysis is very accurate. Despite the sweeteners that will be needed to trade these NTCs, unless Gourde and Johnson hold long term value with their contracts, teams just might avoid them for any trade. IMO Killorn and his M NTC might be easiest player to move to either Dallas or Nashville who might value his play and contract for three years. One of Cirelli or even the recently signed Sergachev would the only choices that Tampa really have.

Are they possibly looking at moving Stamkos? He has a great contract and would fetch a good return. Just throwing it out there.

I'm surprised Killorn isn't a more popular trade target tbh. He's always been a great top-9 winger and is coming off an excellent season. $4.45 million is a little much, but its not totally unreasonable. Could probably get a 3rd or 4th for him too, instead of giving pieces up.

I just don't see NMC and captain of the Lightning wanting to move at this time. Four years from now, when he's a UFA, maybe he does a Thornton and signs with the Leafs as the Leafs try to win their first Cup since 1967.

Killorn and Johnson will likely be traded. Gourde has 5 years left on his contract with a NTC. Tough sell in a flat cap world. So is Johnson. I still think Stamkos starts the season on LTIR.

Even if they find a trade partner, they all have NMC or NTC clauses, so they (the players) do not have to do a thing and probably don't want to....
as previously stated on this site by so many people, these players like having their NTC/NMC and don't want to leave a championship team, making good money, living in a nice city with warm weather/beaches and very low / no state income tax.
I'm tired of people saying on this site that Palat or Gourde or Killorn have positive value and some team will trade a 3rd or 4th pick for them.
Tampa will need to spend their next 2 or 3 1st round picks at the very minimum to unload a couple of these players, and ONLY IF they can get one or two to waive.
They already tried a couple months ago just waiving Johnson to see if someone would take him for free, and nobody did.
Their best option now is to waive Gourde to see if someone picks HIM up for free.
If not, waive Killorn, to see if someone takes HIM for free.
If not, waive Palat, to see if someone takes HIM for free.
If not, their final option is to hire Tanya Harding's crew to take the tire iron to 1 or 2 of the players you mention above.
If you're too young to know what I'm talking about, google it.

The Jackets just damn near gave away two better LDs for a nicer return than that to have what space we have and are still overstrength at that position. You'd be looking at much more bribery to make that happen.
