Solidifying The Roster

Created by: AnalyticsGeek
Team: 2020-21 Pittsburgh Penguins
Initial Creation Date: Dec. 16, 2020
Published: Dec. 16, 2020
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
I think the Penguins look pretty good going into next season. They have a solid top 6 forward group, solid defence and an excellent fourth line. The main area of need is a 3rd line center, which if they bury a few guys like Sceviour or Ceci in the AHL, they can afford to sign Haula for 3.5 million.

3rd line RW may be vacant as well. I know before, a lot of people were expecting Poulin to make the team. However, SidStick87 believes that is no longer a possibility since he wasn't even able to win a roster spot on the Team Canada WJC roster.

I decided to sign Sheary at 950K AAV for that role. I know a lot of people don't like him, but he's one of my favourites. I feel putting him with Haula and McCann would work well since all 3 guys are really quick and generate possession well. The puck will always be in the offensive zone when they're on the ice.

Rodrigues aside, I’d be thrilled with haula and sheary, I just keep thinking haula would be there already if it was going to happen

Nice* yeah Sheary's only wrongly underrated due to size and this balances their roster much more, at 950k especially he's a nice addition to the bottom 6

*aside from Rodrigues, covered in other replies here

Rodrigues can be sent down though so no sweat

Id love Haula at $2.5 to $2.8m per But Im a SCREAMING NOOOOOOO to Sheary.... Just can't take watching him fall down 93.4 times per game, lol.

But u are Right that this team is a 3C and another top 9 Forward away,

PLUS I don't know why other Pens fans are NOT trading for a "Real" NHL Back-Up Goalie ...
A 1st yr 24yr old Starting Goalie w/ a 29yr old career ECHL / AHL Goalie as the Back-Up Goalie, just screams a Non-Playoff team to me.

TBH I was surprised Rodrigues didn’t want to sign with the Leafs. I feel he has the skillset to be a depth forward at NHL level, just didn’t know where to send him. I rate him as a smaller version of Tanev.

I mean, they could definitely use a better backup.

I agree with watching Sheary fall around, IMO that ship has sailed and its time to bring someone else in. As much as the goalies will scary us, I think they can certainly surprise well enough. The key will be how much the defense can limit the pressure they face so that they don't have to stand on their head the entire time.

$3.5M is rather steep for Haula considering he's missed almost 90 games in the last 2 seasons. He's also only really had one good offensive season and that was with Vegas in year one when everyone lit it up. I'd take him at around $2.25, but only if he's 100% healthy and ready to go right from opening night.

I think the defence is fine, they just need a solid 3C and they'll be contenders.

Yeah that's true, Haula hasn't been able to stay healthy or consistent these past seasons. I just don't see a lot of other options at this point.

No chance they waive Ceci going into the season.
Sceviour maybe.

Def arnt bringing Sheary back or they would have already

I’m down for Haula but is he getting 3.5 at this point?

Fine, but I think pens fans need to just accept that the roster is going to be what it is for the time being

JR and Sully said Matheson Ceci to start, Jankowski or McCann at 3C. Just live with it for now
