Jensen and picks for Raanta

Description
This solves so many things for the Capitals as well as the Coyotes. The Coyotes have a 2-headed goalie monster they're wasting too much salary on. Kuemper has emerged as the likely starter with the better record and stats. Washington has too much on defense and has lost Lundqvist. These teams can help each other. This move allows Washington to pick up a split-option in net superior to Lundqvist (at this stage) and move Nick Jensen, a potential top-4 RH Defenseman who can skate and move the puck which is something Arizona needs in their lineup. Neither Arizona or Washington's cap situation changes. Washington picks up a goalie on an expiring deal (what they want) in exchange for Arizona gaining a RH defenseman with 3 years on a cheap contract (what they'd want too). This allows McMichael/Sprong/Fehervary into the lineup with one of them playing at all times and the other two as extras. This solves both teams problems. The one caveat is that Kempny is still on IR. But, he could come back as we have left around 550k in cap space for washington, in conjunction with sending down Fehervary or Siegenthaler when he returns, his pro-rated contract (should he ever be ready to play again this season), would fit under the cap.

Lundqvist was excellent insurance to Samsonov and would have made an incredible mentor..but I feel like the Caps should go internally still with either Vanecek or Copley. Both those goalies are making NHL $$ currently and Vanecek had a very good year in the AHL. That is just my opinion though as it never hurts to have some experience in net.

The Coyotes need NHL forwards worse than they need more defensemen. Panik might be a better starting price, and I think they'd want a B-prospect instead of a 5th. Johansen?

I think there would be two issues here for the Yotes. One, they have a lot of defense depth as it is so I don't know how useful Jensen would be unless they move one of their lefties. Two, this doesn't save them very much cash and actually ties them to more money moving forward.

Maybe the 2nd is enough to outweigh these thinks, I'm not sure. But just food for thought.

I'm mystified by these two comments. Arizona has 7 defensemen under contract for this season and 5 of them are UFAs (Hjalmarsson, Goligoski, Demers, Oesterle and Lyubushkin), three of whom are, to put it charitably, are on the downside of their careers. In fact, right now the Coyotes don't have a qualifying defenseman that they wouldn't protect for the expansion draft. Moreover, Arizona has only one prospect defenseman on each side projected to be NHL material (Capobianco, LD and Soderstrom, RD). So they can't be said to "have a lot of defense depth" -- to the contrary, even under the best of circumstances (i.e., both prospects develop well enough to make the roster next year), Arizona only has 4 defensemen set for 2021-2022 and would have to resign at least one of the veterans in addition to both Oestrle and Lyubushkin or else go outside the organization to ice 7 blue-liners next season.

I think that this trade is brilliant. My only criticism is that I think that given their draft dance card, Arizona would hold out for a 2021 second and I think Washington would give it to them.

Great vision on this one.

The Caps will be fine with Vanecek or Copley as backup. If Samsonov drops the ball, Raanta isnt the answer anyway.

My school of thought is if Arizona is going to try to make a go of it, adding another defender isn't helping right now. They're pretty much set on the blueline. Trading Raanta prevents them from losing Hill to waivers and gives them an opportunity to add depth up front.

In my case, Johansen and a 2nd are a bonus really: Panik in this case, and the financial savings of this trade, are the primary returns here.

I don't think Arizona can justify blowing up their roster until the deadline: I think a lateral move to save money, optimize the roster, and secure Hill at least until expansion, would make the most sense.

I'm confused -- what does Richard Panik have to do with this? And I don't see one or two trades "blowing up their roster."

I propose that the Capitals instead trade Panik, Johansen, and a 2nd instead of Jensen in exchange for Raanta.

What small pieces can the Coyotes afford to trade beyond Raanta in order to maintain a roster poised for the playoffs? I firmly see that this is the only real "small trade" they could make without jeopardizing their playoff odds.

Panik doesn't really do much for them. He turns 30 in 7 weeks, is signed for 3 years, and won't break into Arizona's top 6 (as unimpressive as it is). If it was Alexeyev or Fehervary and a second, that would be proper value. Johansen doesn't move the needle.
