Those teams have cap space to sign other guys to expose in the draft. I am sure extending a defensemen currently on the roster on a low cost 1 year deal will help

I don't think Joe Sakic or Ron Francis would let their best defencemen get picked in the expansion draft. Also, Valeri Nichushkin is not playing in the NHL. He signed with CSKA Moscow in the KHL in September, so he's ineligible for the draft.
