Who I Would Protect in the Expansion Draft

Created by: OldNYIfan
Team: 2020-21 Anaheim Ducks
Initial Creation Date: Dec. 18, 2020
Published: Dec. 18, 2020
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
Of course, it's absurdly early to approach this subject, but what else other than consider whether to sign Mike Hoffman do we have to talk about with this team?

LW=forwards I would definitely protect
C=forwards on the cusp due to contract factors (age, salary, term)
RW=forwards on the cusp due to on-ice factors
LD=defensemen I would definitely protect
RD=defensemen on the cusp (all others eligible)
G=john Gibson (duh)
S=guys I would definitely expose
IR=UFAs
LTIR=exempt (not exhaustive) or N/A

I think that Anthony Stolarz has to be re-signed in order to meet the qualifying provisions

Do we keep short-termer Rakell? Do we keep the two most senior forwards?

I have Derek Grant in column (C) purely for sentimental reasons. They'll expose him.

I'd keep the three veteran forwards and Shattenkirk, which may be more revealing of my biases than I intended.

I don't follow Ducks that much but seems like a good plan. And yes, they need to sign one goalie to expose him.

I think one of the three get taken:

Lundestrom, Mahura, or Milano

Would you go 8 skaters or the 7f/3d set up? Now that we got Shatty I've been seeing a lot more people arguing for protecting all 4 of 22/4/47/42. Personally, I think it depends on what the kids show this year and how bad we are. If we're a bottom 10 team again, I'd assume we'll sell so maybe we aren't protecting a guy like manson or rakell anymore (like we trade them). If we're middle of the pack or a fringe playoff team, my guess is we lose either one of the young LHD (guhle, mahura, larsson) or the young forwards (Milano, Heinen, Lundestrom, Jones). Either way I think we're in a decent spot. I'm really excited to see what they do with all the cap space we have going into next year.

I can see Colorado, Los Angeles, Minnesota, Nashville and perhaps Tampa (depending upon what happens with Sergachev and Cernak) protecting 4 defensemen, but I don't think it makes much sense for Anaheim. As you so accurately point out, with Rakell and Manson in the last year of their contracts after expansion, we will probably want to protect as many young forwards as we can because it will still be difficult to predict what their upsides will be as they reach the peaks of their careers. I think that it's possible we could work a deal with Seattle whereby we keep 8 forwards and 4 defensemen and Seattle gets to select both a forward and a defenseman from the remainder, or something like that.

That side deal would be an interesting idea. Give them two lesser players to keep a guy we think is a big part of the future.
