Add at Deadline with 6 Man Taxi Squad

Created by: GMRyan
Team: 2020-21 Toronto Maple Leafs
Initial Creation Date: Dec. 13, 2020
Published: Dec. 20, 2020
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
Leafs will be able to accrue cap space this year if we don’t have any major injuries (placed on LTIR). I’m also inserting a taxi squad here with players I think can slip through waivers.

So I’ve got the Leafs (with calling players up and down as much as possible to create space) accruing - $2,155,158 in cap space by the deadline day (whenever that is)

So with the 6 players (listed here as healthy scratches) on the Taxi squad that should create great competition for Keefe to line match well all year long

So let’s brainstorm a possible deadline day (whenever that is) add or two.

Fun thought experiment for a strange season ahead. I’m excited however so let’s just be thankful hockey is coming back!

Stay safe everyone!

If the Wild move him, Petan doesn’t matter unless he’s a cap equalizer. I think you’ll have to add a decent prospect (Liljegren) to this or start a package with a 1st.

".Leafs will be able to accrue cap space this year if we don’t have any major injuries (placed on LTIR)". Actually that isn't true. A team accrue more cap space if their major injuries to big cap players and they are placed on LTIR. Last year the Leafs were to expand their roster when Muzzinand Reilly went on LTIR, But you really don't want your best players getting injured just so you can get cap space.

You wanna sell Dumba for a 1st+nothing prospect cause you think he's only a 30-40 point defenseman, but you expect the offer for Foligno to start at a 1st+ or Liljegren+2nd+3rd?

Make it make sense my guy.

Actually this is incorrect- you cannot accrue cap space with players on LTIR

Last year the Leafs did not accrue any cap space. They simply used the space created by putting players on LTIR. That is different. I’m speaking about actual cap space being created

I think Foligno for a 1st or Liljegren plus as a starting point given how/why he’s being acquired. I get that there is a disconnect but Foligno is a guy people who can smell the cup want and makes them better. Is that value for him on the high end? Yes. Dumba has 3 years at 6 mil, that is something a team that needs to be more careful with their assets goes after. He is not a deadline pickup in the same sense.

Saying Foligno for a 1st or Liljegren plus here is a starting point. Maybe somebody gives that value, maybe not but I think BG should start there. I realize I’m in the minority regarding Dumba but I maintain that he is worth a 1st and a A/B prospect and that has more value to the Wild when they will be trying to compete. Again, you can disagree with me but I don’t believe I’m being inconsistent with my reasoning.

No one is paying a first, let alone MORE than a first, for a 2.9 million dollar 4th liner rental. He's one of the best 4th liners in the league, but he's not worth a first, and defiantly not lili plus a first.

I agree not Lili plus a 1st. I do however think a 1st could be on the table, especially given how much uncertainty there is around the 2021 draft. I’m using the Goodrow deal as my example and I realize that it’s not a perfect comparison but I don’t think it’s out of the question. I think any team that wants him is willing to throw down a 2nd, and I think there will be a couple of teams that want him and MIN needs to balance any impact they might have on resigning him next year. As a leafs fan, would you rather get the final piece on your cup team or keep your 1st?

depth option rentals are not worth near that. Goodrow only made sense because he was so incredibly cheap, had multi years and that goes for good for Coleman too. It would be stupid to pay anywhere near that much for a guy who might play 10 games for you.

I understand he has value. For sure. I'd love to see him come to the leafs. But he's not costing a first. I'll use your own argument against you with Goodrow. While Foligno might be slightly better, there are 3 reasons why the logic of Goodrow does not apply to Foligno.

a) He's payed 2.875 as opposed to 0.9 mil.
b) Goodrow had an extra year on his contract.
c) Technically Goodrow didn't cost a first anyway since Tampa also got a 3rd round pick in the deal.

So, in conclusion, I'd say the above package is a perfectly fair one, maybe even a slight overpay.
