They are very close. I’m just basing this post off his contract

The way dubas handled the nylander negotiations really set the precedent. Even though nylander’s contract ended up being solid, it was the whole process of him holding out that just showed Dubas was a weak negotiator

@mhockey91 Honestly, this team looks solid on paper. Elite offence, the top 4 defence is statistically very good. If Marner bounces back to his 2018/19 form, I think they could be the best possession driving team in the NHL.

That's how negotiations literally work all the time. Sometimes people hold out and there is nothing you can do. I do enjoy how you leave out the fact that Nylander was the one who caved at the end and Dubas ended up getting the solid contract he wanted

I don’t think Marner is extremely over paid. Maybe 500k. He was on pace for another 90+ point season last year. The problem is that they have 3 guys basically making $11M each. Since the other two are centers and they just named one Captain he’s just the logical trade option to improve the D/depth as they could reasonably get multiple quality players for that $10.8M Marner is making.

Disclaimer: this opinion is based on a Panarin comparison which could be flawed as you can say Panarin got his money because Marner got his.

I think marner is overpaid by $1 million at least but yes I agree. They have 3 guys making a combined 33+ million. Especially considering when they all signed no one predicted this flat cap.

Even without the flat cap they would still struggle with the cap. Its tough to win in a salary cap league when 3 players take up that big of a cap %. Without COVID they’d be able to afford another Simmonds priced player which doesn’t do much for depth anyways.

Now this is a team that can compete. Their current team is drastically worse and will likely be in the lottery.

I know this is sarcasm obviously. I’m curious as how to they will get under the cap given their situation. trade Engvall forsure and maybe someone else

I think that all depends on the taxi squad. The incentives of a 23 man roster are reduced when you have a taxi squad available. I don’t think engvall is traded but I don’t think his cap fits on the roster, probably just keep him on the taxi squad/bury him in the AHL.

Lol, he gets him at a deal and somehow loses. This is capfriendly for you. No matter what, Dubas is terrible.

It was the whole situation. You can’t even sit here with a straight face and tell me Dubas handled that properly. If he would’ve sent the message to the team and traded nylander for a haul, Matthew’s and Marner definitely would’ve signed better deals. Or on the flip side, if Nylander wasn’t being so greedy at the time, Matthew’s and marner would’ve been signed to better deals as well.

Nylander/Dubas situation set the precedent that in a staring contest, Dubas will lose. The agents fully took advantage of that and exploited him. There is a reason why marner is overpaid and Matthew’s term is too short

Can you please explain how this team is any different? It's literally the same team with 2 more healthy scratches, which aren't even that necessary with the taxi squads this year.

Same team, but better set up for the long term with a cheaper marner deal. Also can someone please explain taxi squad to me because I keep seeing people post teams with that. Does that basically mean a team can carry up to 5 extra guys or whatever that don’t count against the salary cap?

Carolina's Aho and Marner contracts came up at the same time. For the two previous years they had identical stats. Aho signed for 8.45m X 5 years, Marner 10.693 for 6 years. Based on Aho contract if the Marner had signed a comparable contract for six years, 9m would have been appropriate. I'll never understand why the Leafs handed out "hometown premium contracts to their big three, 4.5m too much.

The taxi squad details are not all clear atm. What is known is that it will be 4-6 players and that they will be payed AHL salary. They will travel to the game with the team just like the extras on a roster. There will likely be some restrictions regarding eligibility and cap that aren’t revealed yet.

Like I've been saying, it's the term with that aav that's the biggest problem, you give them max value to but up 4 ufa years not 2

Hometown premium is such a good way to put it. I get tavares because he was a UFA, and leafs offered less than isles, but in Marners case, he’s from TO, was drafted by TO, you’d think he’d take a more fair contract to play in Toronto. Usually you see hometown discounts but this was the exact opposite of that
