Vegas trade rumors here: https://vegashockeynow.com/2020/12/18/is-there-a-fit-for-fleury-in-washington-capitals-vegas-golden-knights-trade-rumors/

I think Fleury would be an amazing addition for the Caps for this season, but most likely would be traded after this season to free up salary cap room. I know Fleury has a M-NTC, but I would like to think he would be fine coming to the Caps. Who knows.

And for those thinking Sammy / Vanecek as the tandem, I am not a fan of that for many reasons: Limited experience (26 games), no experience in playoffs, Copley as taxi goalie meaning only 1 goalie left in Hershey, what if one gets injured, etc. I do think Caps make a play for an additional goalie (whatever that may be).

I do not think the Caps would have to throw in a pick, but if it did come down to that, a 3rd and above would be suitable. I do not think the Caps would trade anything better than a 3rd.

This scenario is probably unrealistic (cap situation, Vegas trade, Brassard signing for $800k, etc), but would be interesting. If this did happen, I think this team would be pretty dangerous.

Last I saw the cost for Vegas to get rid of him was a first and a second but that was full salary. No way they take more salary back than they give

Just posting a hypothetical I saw from "Vegas Hockey Talk" (https://vegashockeynow.com/2020/12/18/is-there-a-fit-for-fleury-in-washington-capitals-vegas-golden-knights-trade-rumors/)

As I said in the description, unrealistic.

Caps need cap flexibility for 21-22. They shouldnt tie up 3.5 million for a lower than middle of the road goalie in 21-22.

If Ovie truly wants 12.5 million per season, they will need to save cap anywhere they can.

Agreed - which is why if this were to happen, Fleury would have to be traded after next season (as stated in description).

I know Caps fans love to bring in ex-Penguins, best way to be them without wearing black and gold, right.

However, Fleury is not the same goalie that he was in Pittsburgh. He really isn't worth $3.5Mx2 cap hit to a team that legitimately spends to the cap.

In any $3.5M retention scenario, Vegas would be paying a middle team to Take Fleury, retain the $3.5M then hand Fleury off to the end team. The end team would not be giving up much at all as 36yo $3.5Mx2 Fleury is not something that you "pay" for, and Vegas would be getting nothing in return, except $7M in cap space.

Something like:
Fleury, 1st to middle team for FC's (could be a bust of a prospect, just something with no real value)
Fleury with middle team retaining $3.5Mx2 <-> 5th from end team
Vegas: $7M in cap space for a 1st
Middle team: 1st, 5th for retention
End team: Fleury at $5.3M for a 5th

understandable but, his NMC still remains if he waives it for Washington. That makes him harder to move.

It is really worth the risk if he is below average goalie and expected to get worst based on age?

Honestly, with the window closing fast, I think some might argue yes it is worth the risk. But I am 50/50 honestly. I just do not think Sammy / Vanecek is the tandem to go with with this roster. But would love to be wrong

i don't see it as a good fit personally.

Vegas - they want to create capspace. Sure this saves them $750,000 but then they need to bring up a backup goalie and that eats up all savings.

Capitals - Already at the cap (assuming Lundqvist goes to LTIR or pushes his contract back a year), take on additional cap (although it isn't much), and Caps need additional space to re-sign Ovechkin and extend Vrana/Samsanov. So they have cap issues now and next year could be worse.

Couple reasons this doesn’t make any sense for Vegas, only saves them 750k and MAF will carry the workload since Lehner is recovery from shoulder surgery. If a third team was involved in the deal they’d do the retention and anyone that says Fleury @50% blows, remember, Holtby just signed for 800k more this offseason and posted worse numbers. I think MAF would be a good fit but then Vegas would need a decent cheap goalie back which would require again a third team (maybe Detroit with Bernier?)
