no offence to brent burns, but he's getting old, got term on his deal, and is not really a big minutes, defensive dman that we'd be looking for

Take another look at our top 4 defenceman again for me........the Canadiens had the Big 3 in the seventies.....I do not think any team in the NHL could put up a stronger Big 4 ......Burns still has lots of gas in the tank.

yeah but burns is one of the worst defensive players in the NHL. He puts up a LOT of points, is great offensively etc., but we already have rielly. We need defensively responsible dmen, not more point-producing guys.

also this scenario would see us having burns' $5M AAV on the books when he's like 39-40 years old in the same year matthews/nylander are up for extension. that would be an unmitigated disaster for us, we don't want any contracts to get in the way of keeping those guys, let alone a 40 year old dman

San Jose is not going to get a better deal from any team in the NHL......they can then trade off Kerfoot and Holl for draft picks and get on with their rebuild.

okay wait. i wouldn't mind this. with a legit responsible defenseman in muzz, burns is free. that pairing is lethal and would tear up the league. you know what, screw it. let's do it. they might ask to add a second to the package though, which quite frankly i wouldn't mind.

your point on burns being offensive - he'll play with muzzin, so it's all good.

okay that was funny good point. but burns is more physical and more proven throughout his career than barrie was. but yes, you have a point.

Wait....are you comparing Burns who has played for Team Canada with Barrie???..........Trading for Burns is the type of high reward trade the Leafs need to make to win a Cup.......It is same type of deal that the Raptors pulled off to get Kawi and we all know how well that turned out for Toronto.

I also think Burns can play defense when necessary.....people are writing him off playing on a good team.

burns is better ofc, but they are both offensive minded, powerplay quarterbacking dmen
522e7cdde9046f421e39a126ac189d39.png

we need guys who are responsible defensively, and not absolute liabilities in their own end

barrie was a great skater, zone entry guy, solid passer, great shot, good offensive zone IQ - not as good as burns, but in the same dimension as him. Difference was he was awful defensively, just like burns

we don't need a $5M aav dman to score goals, we need a $5M aav dman to block shots, penalty kill, and be responsible in his own end at 5v5

similar to barrie, burns is a great, skilled, talented dman, but a terrible fit for the leafs

Sj not paying 15 million for him to play against them, another year or two possibly, or they do that 3/4 more times, and even a 5 year plan doesn’t work, with 10 million ish of bad money against the books.

The Sharks have dug themselves into a real hole.......the only way out is to gut team and tank and stock pile draft picks.......no team is going to take on Burns contract without the Sharks retaining significant dollars.......this trade allows Sharks to move on from Burns and pick up two players they can trade out on good contracts for draft picks.......the $3,000,000 retained on Burns is chicken feed in the big picture and not a problem as Sharks are going to be unloading some other big salaries......they need to follow the Ottawa model.

What about couture, vlasic and possibly a few others, I’m not arguing with the hole dug, I’m just saying that they may just have to somewhat ride it out it is so bad, to dig out of there problem, they need to limit retained especially 5 years away. I’m sure there is a variety of teams that would take on burns for some of there shorter contract issues, even lucic in Calgary or Erickson in Vancouver, so sharks free and clear on future cap issues. Holl and overpaid kerfoot not the answer to too many questions.
