Aaaah,

I deleted the explanation, why I asked this question.

Will it be allowed to buyout a NMC before the expansion draft and then do not protect this NMC player?

In my opinion this would be a real bad decision, if the NHL would allow such a NMC dump.

They're not going to change the rules just for the expansion year. Teams are still paying a steep price when buying players out. That's a lot of money out the window. To us fans who cares except for the buyout penalty but to the owner, that's a lot of wasted money.

I'm not sure if teams must submit a list before the buyout period that cannot change with a buyout but I highly doubt it. Teams should have this option because its not exactly a loophole. They're paying dearly for it either way.

Hm, then I don´t know, why all the girls and boys here talk about the problems with the NMC´s.
Buy them out before the expansion draft and nothing is wrong (ok, the teams have to take the buyout penalty).

This might be cheaper, because you can protect another good player.

Example: Anaheim buy out Bieksa and could keep Fowler. Without the buyout and Bieksa is not waving his
NMC, Anaheim has to trade Fowler at the trade deadline or they loose Fowler for nothing in the expansion draft.
Which scenario would be better for Anaheim?

Go use the buyout calculator on some of those players and see how bad the penalty is.........David Clarkson for example is so bad that it literally makes more sense to keep him until his contract ends. Most NMC's are given to high priced players who if bought out, the penalty is long and expensive for the team to swallow.

Yeah, buyouts are costly but in some extreme cases may be necessary. For example, if for some reason Pittsburgh can't find any trade partners for Fleury and he does not agree to waive his NMC, they will have to buy him out in order to protect Murray. But it will cost them nearly 2 mil against the cap of dead money through 2020-2021.

Buyouts aren't going to change but the most interesting point here is how much it will affect future contracts especially in regards to NMCs. Gotta think the NHL is going to be adding team 32 sooner than later to even up the west with the east and then this whole thing will start again. With the cap projected to keep going up every year (at least until the impending 2020 lockout), contracts will be getting bigger and bigger and worse and worse to buy out.

Marc: Please, what is fantasy that the Ducks have to protect Bieska or buy him out. Or there going to lose Fowler for nothing. So what if they lose Fowler, he's a UFA in a year anyway.

Horton for the Leafs has a NMC. He can't be bought out because he's on LTIR. Is Horton going to waive NMC.....yes. What would happen if the Leafs had to protect him cause wouldn't waive? Well the Leafs would lose a better player in the draft. What would Horton lose.....free tickets to Leaf games, free food which Leaf alumni get. He would be barred from the Air Canada Centre if he doesn't waive.
Bieska isn't gong to taken Vegas. So he waives his NMC so his team the Ducks can protect another Dman in the draft, so the Ducks have a better shot of winning the Cup in Bieska last season in the NHL.
If he doesn't he's non grata in Ducks land for the next 50 years, starting in the summer of 2018.
