Yes his cap will be exempt as long as he is on LTIR but the moment he is healthy he will count again so they have to clear space in advance of that. As it is now, they can run a 20 man roster and be compliant but any minor injury and they are below 20 people because to bring a guy off the taxi squad you need space for him. And they have none, guys on IR still count against the cap. So anything minor and they have no space to fill the spot.

They are saying he won't be healthy until playoffs and as we all know, there's no salary cap in the playoff so the cap won't be an issue.

But any minor injury and you can't even call someone up from the taxi squad. Like if a player gets sick they will not dress and you have no space to call up a replacement from the taxi squad. And you can't use LTiR unless there is a reasonable assumption he will miss 10 games. So let's say Killorn gets the flu, you need to sit him but since you only have 150k in space you can't afford a replacement and you have to play with 19 players. Tampa still needs a good amount of space

Surgery is normally something that you can say how long it happens and how long the player stays away.

Typically when they give a timeline, it's pretty spot on. Same thing happened when Kane broke his collarbone in 2015, they loaded up at the deadline, he came back for game 1 of the playoffs, and the hawks won it all.

The most you can hold a guy out is probably 2 weeks max for a conditioning stint but other than that it’s pretty strict in the CBA. The NHL can question the validity of injury/recovery and have an independent doctor do an assessment to confirm per the CBA.

Kuchervov 9.5m LTIR saves Tampa for now. Killorn certainly is tradable (to limited number of needed) if needed. The easiest trades that saves cap though Tampa doesn't want to it are Sergachev, Cirelli and Cernak

Usually yup but as he nears being cleared it will be easy to see if the team is purposely keeping him out of the lineup just to circumvent the cap. It's like when Robidas and Lupal were both on LTIR people accused the Leafs of just saying they were injured to save cap. The players have to have medical evaluations proving it.

Exactly so Tampa likely needs to clear cap to ensure they can be compliant and if they don't do it by the trade deadline they will have to pay an even bigger price (players can be traded after the deadline but won't be able to suit up for their new team until the next season)
