MTL fans taking note of Stepan trade

Created by: Shanesaw9
Team: 2020-21 Montreal Canadiens
Initial Creation Date: Dec. 27, 2020
Published: Dec. 27, 2020
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
Stepan got a 2nd round pick (somehow) because his actual salary is only $2M so his $6.5M cap hit doesn't matter to Ottawa.

Must mean when Weber has 3 years left at only $1M in salary with a cap hit of $7.8M MTL should have no problem getting their first rounder.

Or better yet we trade him back to Nashville with the threat of him retiring and then taking cap recapture penalties.

Ignoring a couple things. Having longer term would make Stepan less valuable in this case due to his cap hit being around for turn around years. Weber also comes with a high likelihood of recapture penalties to any team taking him on. Both of those things will work against Weber in this dream scenario. In shorter terms, you won't get anything close to a 1st or 2nd.

It was more of a joke than anything else, I can't believe Stepan had any value.

For the recapture penalty Nashville is the only team on the hook when it comes to Weber. So the only difference contract wise is term as well as higher cap hit but lower actual $$$.

Plus I think Weber is more valuable than Stepan, even 3 years from now.

Didn't the NHL get rid of the recapture penalty?

Also, yeah Weber will probably have value because he's being paid so little.

I don't know the details but they did modify it so Nashville won't get destroyed, there is still a penalty though.

Are we really still scared of recapture after this offseason? He will just do what Steen and Boychuk did. As a Preds fan I’m not too worried anymore.

Those players both had injuries that forced them to retire early, do you know something we don't about Weber?

Seems to happen to almost every single player who's signed well beyond their prime. Some kind of "Injury" forces them to retire

Brian Burke had a good point the other day about Steen. Guys that play long enough, especially those that play tough, likely have something nagging them that is bad enough to be called an injury. Weber fits this mold. He is a competitor, so If he quits it will be because he isn’t able to go 100%.

He had double knee surgery like 2 years ago. He definitely is going to have some nagging injuries into his late 40's. Thankfully he never relied on his speed

The NHL just lengthened the time period to repay it. Also the payments can't be higher than the AAV so take Webers recapture penalty which is 24 Mil instead of having to repay all that at once they only have to pay back his AAV every year until that 24 Mil is paid off so basically 4 years.

All good with me; the main thing is MTL is not on the hook for Weber's cap hit.
