So OTT picks up usable bodies (and deadline bait) Derek Stepan, Braydon Coburn & Cedric Paquette by moving down maybe 5-15 spots in the 2nd round, and TBL potentially dodges moving Johnson, Killorn, or other depth & brings almost everyone back for another Cup run by running on LTIR for the year.
Question: How does this help Tampa's cap situation? They're $17M over the cap right now. Isn't there a limit to how much salary they can place on LTIR? Otherwise, what would stop a team from taking every other teams' bad contracts in exchange for other assets?
There is no limit to LTIR. The reason LTIR contracts aren’t traded, is because as long as they’re insured, they don’t really make much difference unless the team wants/needs to accrue cap space. So there’s no reason for players like Kesler, Hossa, or Zetterberg to be traded.
In this case trading Gaborik helps Ottawa not go over the 50 contract limit and also allows them to accrue cap space, meaning that if they don’t make more moves they’d have $36 million in deadline cap space. Trading Nilsson also accomplishes that, while saving real money.
I think this trade is telling though. 3.35 in cap space, on 1 year deal cost them a 2nd.
Their odds of moving someone like TJ was non existent in that kind of a market.

They are though. Because it means they can play Johnson instead of having him in the minors/taxi squading or losing someone to waivers.
Tampa didn't lose anyone they really cared about and got out of their problems. They win.
So many people seem not to understand this. Once again, Lightning front Office has surfed through cap hell in style, without losing any important piece of its roster/prospect pool.
It's bad because they should be able to get more for taking on cap space. Ottawa gets better, but it doesn't change the fact that they are nowhere close to a playoff team
A 2 got Detroit to take on 5.7 and staal how’s is this a bad deal? Especially for the tightwad Melnyk. Nilsson contract isn’t insured and Gaborik is 80% saving Melnyk
Approximately 3.2 mil in real dollars

It’s a win-win

Oh, he should play regularly in OTT. His competition is Gudbranson, Reilly, Brown, etc
They want Gudbranson to play with Chabot to start, and they want Wolanin to play. So it’s Coburn, Reilly and JBrown for the last two spots. Coburn is a better option for PK than Reilly, and that might be a reason to play him, with JBrown.
Good and fair deal for both sides. Ottawa picks up another top-64 pick and gets a little over 2M in real dollar savings. Tampa gets help with their cap crunch for this season.[
It’s actually 3.2 in real dollars all 2.6!of Nilssons and 20% of Gaborik 600+k

Glad Tampa Bay Has the best management team in the league

There is no limit on LTIRs. Why should they? Teams aren't cap punished for having injured players. Having Gaborik and Nillson going to Tampa doesn't help/or hurt Tampa's cap situation. It just saved the Senators3.2m in really $$$$. due to 20% of uninsured LTIR of the two players. The reality is the Sens got a second rounder and one year of Pacquette for taking on Cobouns 1.7m one year cap hit. I wish folks wouldn't be so concerned about the trading of LTIR players ... 99% of the time it has absolutely nothing to do with either teams actually cap.

Yeah. It's more like the old trade where teams just straight up added money in a trade.
Ottawa made a terrific move with this deal. THEY get back the 2nd round pick which is perfect. They Get TWO Super Solid dedicated and cheap costing players who bring experience and championship pedigree to their team. They DUMP unusable salary and free up more cap. Absolute WIN!!! Again, I LOVE what they are doing!

Agree on all points except for that Ottawa didn't gain more cap.....Nilsson and Gaborik were on LTIR so their cap hit meant nothing. But it was good for Tampa too, getting rid of 4.3 in cap minus maybe 1.8m in replacements for a very needed 2.5m in actual cap saving.
