Description
If the Blues end up getting Hoffman, does it make sense to trade Sanford now for a draft pick? I think the Blues are more invested in Blais than Sanford at this point. Kyrou needs Top 9 F time on the right side. I think trading Sanford would actually bring back decent return. I mean he is 26 and put up 30 points last season. He could probably go for a 3rd rounder or a 2nd rounder from a Cup contending team. What do you guys think?
Also, signing Dunn for a 4 year deal would help the Blues the most. I get it, he will be 27/28 at the end of the contract and an UFA, but signing him to a 2 year bridge will cause more harm when Parayko and other players need contracts. Blues can also do like a 1 year deal with Dunn, and then depending on what happens this season sign him to a longer term deal like 4.5-5.25M AAV for 4-6 years.

would be pretty bad idea to sign dunn to a deal that takes him to UFA as a 27 year old but trading away sanford probably makes sense, unlikely though considering hes cheap for what he brings and STL is still a cup contender themselves

It is my opinion that the Blues should trade Sanford if Hoffman stays with the team (which appears likely). If the top six wings going forward on this team (beyond this season) are going to be Schenn, Schwartz (presumably), Tarasenko, and Kyrou, then Sanford is at best on your third line, where you can find people for cheaper than he'll make on his next contract (like Blais). Obviously Hoffman is now getting the minutes that Sanford would have been getting in the top six this year, so why wait? Get assets now instead of when we'll be losing him for nothing in the expansion draft (if they take him). We really need to clear a roster spot for Kyrou anyway.

We can trade Gunny, who makes more and will play less. No need to ship out an appreciating asset who plays a Blues style game. Anyway, I doubt anyone gives a 2021 2nd for him, and I certainly don;t want to see him suiting up for a division rival (in normal years, that is).

Yeah for Dunn I can see them doing a 1 year deal and then extending him for like a 5 year $4.8M AAV something like that

I agree, I would rather trade Sanford now and get something in return than let Seattle take him for free when Seattle can either pick Hoffman or Perron easily.

Yeah, Gunny would be nice to get a rid of but splitting time between Gunny and Bort is the plan I believe. The Dallas option was just a random contender, I feel like shipping Sanford east is the safest route, somewhere like CAR or MTL and get one of the Fleury's in return.

Mikkola can quite easily fill Gunny's spot. He's ready. And Bortz is not platooning anymore, he's our 3rd RD now for sure.

I might play Mikkola over either of them honestly. And maybe even Walman or Perunovich over either of them too. IDK that any of them will necessarily be better than the vets (I think we can safely say Mikkola would be as good), but Gunnarsson was really really bad last year even playing most of his minutes with Pietrangelo and I really don't think it's smart of the Blues to pencil Bortuzzo in for everyday duty for the first time in his career when he's 31 and we're already counting on a bounce back from a different RHD, so it's worth experimenting with the young guys on that third pair. I'd like to see one of these young lefties who have more upside play their offhand instead, especially if it's Perunovich (who we need to convert to a RHD anyway), and keep Bortuzzo as a platoon. Bortuzzo has his place on this team, but less is more in this scenario.

bad take. one injury and suddenly he is needed in the top 6. Having too many good players is never a bad thing

I'm a big fan of the "don't solve a problem till you need to" thing but Sanford might be my third choice as far as "replacements in the top six" go after Kyrou and Thomas, and Bozak/Blais could pass him if he doesn't have a repeat of the twenty five good games he had last season (call me pessimistic to that point). His value is also at an all time high right now because of those good games, and we're short on draft capital. He could fetch as much as a second round pick for those teams who missed out on Hoffman (and don't check xGAR). And depending on the deal Dunn signs, we may have to make another move anyway.

If we have three injuries in the top six and we traded him, then sure. You can tell me my take was bad then. It's a short season though, so probably not. And, as I said, with the landscape of UFAs right now, there will plenty of players with a similar impact as Sanford that we can sign for much cheaper than Sanford's next deal in future seasons (Josh Leivo, Dominik Kahun, Lucas Wallmark all signed pretty much league min and they're more or less the same player as Sanford)

It's a flat cap, use it wisely.

They wouldn't take hoffman as he would be an ufa. And they can take perron because he's still come back to st.louis for the fourth time. Realistically, Seattle isn't taking a 30 something forward when they are trying to build a long-term team.
