Buffalo says.... maybe?
Tough to say how the new GM feels about Montour,
most Sabres fans thought either he or Ristolainen would’ve been traded a while ago now
And no guess how he feels about Gostisbehere
What happened to him btw?
He was so good as a rookie
He had a 60pt season just 3 seasons ago, and had a 50+ pt averaged his first 4 yrs. In Philly: Provorov, Sanheim, Myers, Hagg all developed and came into the NHL right after Ghost. 3 of those guys are strong puck rushers and 30+ pt dmen (and Hagg in 3rd pairing and PK minutes is a 20+ pt guy too). With Niskanen signing, suddenly Ghost 2 yrs ago was pushed for top 4 minutes and found his minutes and PP time (PHI only uses 1 dman on PP) diminished. Last season Niskanen joined and Ghiost started to suffer a lot of nagging injuries. When Ghost went on IR, Hagg came in and the entire team caught fire.
Philly needed a stay at home in Hagg more than another puck rusher and the team went from 7th in the east to almost first and won the round robin. So Ghost was pushed out on LD by Sanheim and Provorov, and just isn't going to get the minutes on 3rd pairing, (also on LD is Hagg, posibbly Eric Gustafsson, prospects Zamula, Cam York and Millman).
He is a good puck rusher with a great shot, but his size and defense is just slightly average, (his best play over the years was with a solid veteran). So overall, he still has good game and could easily be a number 3 on many teams, but hes squeezed out in Philly, plays an ineffective game in limited minutes on 3rd pair, carries an ample cap hit for 3 years. Other than his cap hit hes a low risk-high reward type investment.
Buffalo needs to make some strides now, before Eichel and Hall throw in the Buffalo towel, and Ghost is probably a better shot to do that and continue so, than Montour, (similar age and salary), who is a slightly better defender, but lesser offensive force.
BUF has a lot of options at RD, but fewer on LD.
