this is the wrong move. It's moves like this that have wrecked this team. They can not keep trading away good young players and draft picks for expiring rentals.
This doesn't make them a better team.

We inserted the young players and added a two way center 3C, something we have been missing. Can't finesse your way in the playoffs. Added some muscle in Foligno, something we also lack.

switching Bonino for McCann does not make this a better team. That contract ends and he's gone. Meanwhile the penguins are scrambling to find a fast young player like McCann. They are counting on him breaking out this year anyway. They know he can do it if he can just get consistent. The hardest part for a younger player. . But he just turned 24, you don't trade guys like that for a rental. You just don't do that and claim to fix problems. Hell he's probably worth both those players alone given Bonino's contract is a rental and McCann is full control for years.
And if they wanted muscle Martin is easily available. You don't have to give up picks to get a quality 4th line goon.

Foligno is way more than a fourth line goon. Can give up lower picks but Matt Martin is nothing close to Foligno.

who is more of a goon is really besides the point, lets not pretend Martin isn't a goon. Truth is neither is going to play over ZAR which is why they don't rush out to get Martin to being with. Even though they do need a guy like that. We aren't getting him because they want to play flag hockey.
In the end we give up a guy who just turned 24 who is looking like a guy who can easily be a 20+ goal guy in his prime. Which he hasn't hit yet. For a rental 3C. That isn't good asset management.

Minnesota doesn't do this. They can get more draft capital dealing them separately. McCann and Riikola aren't players we want.

Bonino 50% + Foligno does not net McCann, much less McCann, Riikola, 2nd, 7th. Riikola + 4th, maybe Riikola + 3rd.

Yeah, you're not even remotely close to reality, at all.

Well, I wouldn't say less. Boom.

I am very familiar with Bonino, less so with Foligno, but have seen a good bit. Riikola, 3re, and I'll add back the 7th just to quell the outrage.

Trade one of our best young players, under 25 years old for Bonino back. No thanks.

McCann has had back to back 35 point seasons. 19 goals in 18-19 and 35 points and 14 goals and 35 points last year in a shortened season and playing out of position; at Center.

He’s only 24 years old. Played in the NHL since he was 19 years old. Been moved around from 3C, to mid 6 wing, to top 6 wing, to bottom 6 wing, to 2C when Geno or Sid miss time.

Young players need consistency and routine, to play in and out of slumps. Can’t be moved around like a utility player. Not all players can do that, most can’t, and most that can do it and are good at it are older, veteran players.

He’s played every where we have been weak and done well. A good two-way player, fast, great shot, good scorer!!

And still only 24 years old coming off back to back 35 point seasons!!

JR and Sully have it right. He a wing, he will just play the wing this year and do what he does best and score!!

Not play Center and have to worry carrying a line and play-making for all his teammates. Just score!! And he will!! He’ll score 20 plus easily!! He already had 19 goals in 18-19 and was moved around everywhere. Give him that consistency and routine that young players need. Hes gonna stay at 3rd line LW and just score and play good defense like he always does.

Dumping McCann, one of your best players under 25, for Bonino isn’t a good move. And Riikola, one of the top 5 7th D in the NHL IMO.

Plays both LHD and RHD equally as well. Can be trusted and is trusted to slide into the 2nd pairing and 3rd pairing, either side. Has played well coming over from Europe as a top FA signing, 2 years ago, in llimited games. And not limited Ice time. Played 15 minutes a game last year and 17 minutes a game in 18-19. Great analytics and underlying numbers. He’s a great 7th D. He would be a 3rd pairing D on a lot of NHL teams. probably half. Again, a top 5 7th D in the NHL !!
