Description

My picks for the habs taxi squad to start next season. This is my lineup, but I think there will be a couple battles in camp worth watching:

1. Byron vs. Frolik and Perry
- I am giving Byron the benefit of the doubt, but I think two of these players will be waived to play on the taxi squad to start the season. This is very good veteran depth to have in case of injuries, the best player of the three should be in the lineup when healthy.

2. Defence (What to do with Kulak)
- Weber, Petry, Chiarot, and Edmundson are all locks to be playing, they're even likely going to be the top 4. I would like to see Kulak playing alongside Jeff Petry because we know the two have chemistry. Kulak looks great alongside Petry, not so good when he isn't with Petry. MTL should maximize Kulak's value and look to trade him this season for cap space, and so Seattle is goded into drafting someone else with a bigger cap hit like Chiarot or Edmundson. This is assuming Romanov is able to step into a top 4 role this season, I have him starting on the third line, but I don’t expect him to stay there for long. When Kulak is traded MTL has Mete, who is younger and has proven he can play top 4 minutes in the past, as well as Juulsen or Fluery who are physical RD's.

Once Kulak is traded MTL should add a LW at the TDL to round out their top 9. D lineup would then look like:
Romanov - Weber
Edmundson - Petry
Chiarot - Mete / Juulsen / Fluery

MTL could also add a 7 D rental at the TDL or they have Ouellet, Brook, Oloffson and Leskinen in the AHL. Harris should also be signed after his NCAA season ends. In fact as I'm typing this I decided to add a LD for the Taxi Squad in Ron Hainsey. I'm just assuming he is available cheap, he would be a good fit if MTL is planning on trading Kulak.

3. Jake Evans
- 4th line C is his spot to lose, I don't think he will lose it but it still is something to watch.

1. What makes you so sure that Perry will make it over Byron?

2. Why would we do that? The only reason not to put someone on the taxi squad is because we could lose them on waivers, which isn't a concern for anyone on waivers. Cap space is accumulated daily so the more cap space we have the better as we would then have more to work with at the TDL.

I can see Byron, Frolik, and Perry taking turns in the lineup and the Taxi Squad. Can't see Byron getting claimed off waivers if anything it would solve cap problems for MTL.

But I agree, I see Perry more as RW insurance more than anything. Good to have considering Gallagher, Anderson, and Armia all missed time with injuries last year.

This only happens if Edmundson fits and Romanov is ready, which remains to be seen.

In which case I'm trading defensive depth for forward depth, not just for the sake of trading Kulak.

Disagree 100%. People need to disassociate Byron the player and Byrons cap hit.

Byron is overpaid for the role he now has with the Habs as he used to get a lot more top 6 minutes but is still a solid NHL bottom 6 player now.

IMO Perry is elite depth on a good team at this stage of his career. Not sure about more than that.

Hainsey would make sense. Also, he'd be the 6th (yep, count 'em, 6th) cup winner that Bergevin would have brought in this off-season.
Allen, Edmundson, Toffoli, and now Frolik & Perry.
