Embrace the Tank

Created by: JordanCGrant

Description
The Hockey Gods have forced the Tank this season. Here is how I would try to maximize the assets from this year and hope you have a healthy team for next year. We probably will suck more than the Wings did last season especially after the deadline. Usually, you don't rock your young goalies this way, but if Dylan Strome is your 1C your season is over considering we have been the worst defensive team for past two years and now we have no centers for faceoffs or driving offense.

Hard pass on that WPG trade. Murphy is a lot better than DeHaan. I also don't think PIT does that trade for DeHaan.

Don't disagree, but unless Seabs waives his NMC Murphy is exposed in the expansion draft. Might as well get the asset for him. WPG after last year lost their top 2 right defenseman. This way they get a serviceable top 4 defender for 1.5 years at a reasonable price. Pitt depends if they're in the hunt at the deadline, but given that the traded a top 9 winger for spare pucks to sign Jack Johnson I wouldn't put a trade like this past them.

As a pens fan, I would rather see them go for Soderberg as we need a 3C but with the way that GMJR does business... we may be overpaying for another dman grimace

I agree Chicago should trade Murphy, but for more than a 2nd. Remember Murphy is a big, right shot defenceman, was a 1st round 20th overall pick, and plays over 20 minutes a game, and is still only 27, prime age for a defenceman. He's too old for a Chicago rebuild, but a good age to be traded.

Murphy is worth more then a 2nd

De Haan is not worth a 2nd, 3rd at best given his cap hit.

You think you could get more than that in the flat cap? I tend to be tentative with trade values as a lot of fluctuation and variables based on team needs and situation. I think Devon Toews went for a second or two seconds. I didn't know if Murphy's value around the league would be the same as that so I probably undervalued it.

Cap isn't the big issue with him its his health. When healthy he was our best defenseman in the regular season last year. Given his health I can understand a third, but may have overestimated his value based on his play when healthy.

If I am Stan Bowman they would be the team I would target for a trade. JR is always win now mode and has a bad habit to overpay. Though when you have Crosby and Malkin and are less removed from winning than Chicago it makes somewhat sense to try winning one more time before the window closes.

Oh yeah I really don't want to rebuild. I say as long as we have Sid and Geno we will always be a playoff team. (Of course that may be my diehard fan attitude lol)

Why exactly are the habs trading a 3rd for a guy that was a free agent this year who is a fringe 3rd liner?

It's true that there is a flat cap, and Murphy's contract would be a consideration in the trade, but he's signed so his cap hit is already established. When he needs to be resigned is when the cap will come more into play. If a team can't afford the $3.85MM, then they don't trade for him. If I'm Pierre Dorion, I'm on the phone with Stan Bowman and hammering out a deal. With extra 2nd round picks and a cupboard full of prospects, a deal should be easy to be completed. Even if it's a 2nd and a B prospect, it's still more than a 2nd.

Murphy is better then De Haan IMO. De Haan is a better puck mover but Murphy is better edge player and more physical.
