Also, the Bruins defense has really taken a hit this offseason. This move clearly wasn't about money... what's wrong in Beantown?

Nothing to see here.... we all knew this was coming.... LOL

Gratz on the 2010 Stanley Cup, Washington

Imagine telling someone in 2010 that chara, lundqvist, ovi, and backstrom will all be signed at the same time

Edit: also oshie, and potentially Craig Anderson

Yet another reason to hate the Caps lol

The caps are looking good. I'm worried and a little ticked that our penguins haven't done anything. I was hoping we would get Chara or Haula or Sheary again or anyone cheap that could improve us lol. This is tough to see our rival getting some cheap goods. huff

I'm pretty shocked he left boston no lie.
The dude has a luxury real estate office there with potential to land big bucks. 800k is like nothing.

Nearing?!!!!

Ovechkin still has some miles left on him and can contribute more offensively than the best player on some teams

Weird that Boston wouldn’t bring him back. It’s not like they’re swimming in defensive depth.

Boston is missing the playoffs this season. I guarantee it. They are nowhere near as good as PHI, NYI, & WASH. The NYR are gonna be really good and you can’t ever count out the Pens. Bruins will be 6th in the East.

Gonna be a long season in Beantown. Especially in the most stacked division.

Most teams. He’s still the best goal scorer in the NHL in my opinion.

Need room for the young guys to have a chance. LD has been locked for years, it's time for the kids they've been developing to show what they got. Sweeney is playing this right.

Why do you think that? They won the presidents just last year. It's basically the same team. They upgraded their RW depth. The only guys they lost was krug and chara. Gryz can easily fill that krug hole and 1 of the LD kids will step up for chara's lost, whether thats lauzon, zboril, or vaak. This is more of a changing of the guards than a rebuild.

Yeah but defense is so important, especially in today's game.
They play a lot more minutes than forwards do.
You can't underestimate Chara and Krug's impact on the team. The two, alongside McAvoy and Carlo, formed one of the deadliest top four's in the NHL because they complimented each other so well. Chara, even not in his prime, has a long reach that is without par. McAvoy has great even-strength offensive ability, alongside physicality and a good skating stride. Krug was the team's power play specialist and Carlo is the stay at home guy who skates well.
Basically, their best left D is now Matt Grzelcyk. He can take more important minutes, since he did well in a limited role, but he does not have the reach and physicality of Chara nor the power play ability of Krug.
I don't think they will collapse. Their offensive lines are unchanged except for Craig Smith, and they still have one of the deadliest first lines in the NHL. Oh wait, Marchand and Pasta are both injured to start the year.
Nevermind, we'll see how it goes. I was wrong about Columbus and Winnipeg.

Marchand should be good to start the szn if no setbacks. Lauzon is your new long reach tall physical guy. Gryz is definitely no downgrade to an absent krug pp. The top4 should be lauz-chuck gryz-carlo. They will be fine.

For $795K and 1 year this is terrific. Leadership, dedication, Size, Strength and the fact that he's a winner both on and off the ice is great.

I agree with Brian there that its a possibility atleast that Bruins might miss the playoffs.

Gryz isnr easily replazing Krug, not even in a good year.
Pastrnak and marchants injuries might last longer than hoped, and when its a compact 56 game season battling an tough East Division with a few improved teams its a possibility.

Basically boston needs top quality goaltending from Rask who last played in March.

Ohh yeah. Its gonna be sweet seeing them play each other 9 times grin Would be dreamy if Zdeno had to disciplin marchant for being a lil tossup.

I'm disappointed. Wrong team. Shameful salary. What will be Chara's role? Third pairing, healthy scratch or LTIR all season long?

Probably third pair shutdown defender with bigger role in penalty kill. Not bad signing as such by no means. Brings leadership and makes sure people work as they should out there and at practise.

Chara should play on the powerplay as a net front presence, I remember when the B's scored 3 late goals against the Leafs in the 2012 playoffs Game 7, Chara had his butt in Reimer's face on 2 of them.

Thanks for the memories frown

So they're saying that their Cup window is now closed? I don't get it.

They're saying chara is too slow for the game now and it's time for some young blood to get injected into the lineup
