Ottawa does. They arent under any pressure to move out money, thus surrendering a 2nd round pick just to trade a bad contract doesnt make sense for them. They would be better served burying him if needed for now like MTL did with alzner then possibly buy him out 2 or 3 years down the line without needing to take a bad asset back.

i think vancouver would pass, idk if theyd be willing to trade 2 year of loui for 4 of zaitsev for only a second. They got contract extensions coming up in 2 years

Without money retained on Zaitsev, Vancouver has no reason to do this. Their cap is fine this season. They'd be sacrificing one bad year of Loui for 3 years of Zaitsev. No thanks. I've floated this around for months but with retained money on Zaitsev and Ottawa taking back another bad contract either Beagle or Roussel. Vancouver desperately needs cap next season but Ottawa doesn't. Ottawa will need their cap in 2022 going forward whereas Vancouver has many contracts coming off the books in 2022.

There's a deal to be made here but Zaitsev is clearly the much worse contract and that goes without saying the low salary of Loui will save Melnyk millions of real money.

It's that last point that is the key to why this deal wouldn't happen. Zaitsev is an annual cap hit of $4.5M x 4 = $19M, and all $19M of that is real money owed. Eriksson is $6 x 2 = $12M with only $5M being real money. I think if Ottawa retained $1.5M a year on him, bringing him to $13M in real money, and Eriksson to $11M, the Canucks may do this deal even without a draft pick thrown in.

This is an easy pass.

Trading a guy who’s overpaid by $1MM for a guy that’s overpaid by $5MM isn’t a good idea for Ottawa.

Zaitsev is miscast as a top pair D, think Phaneuf, but he brings a lot more to a team than Eriksson, who’s barely holding onto a roster spot. Eriksson has 56 games left before Vancouver buys him out. Zaitsev will play through his contract, just not necessarily for Ottawa, but maybe he does stay in Ottawa. If Zaitsev is scoring 30 points or more, this isn’t even a conversation, but he isn’t, so he’s overpaid, but not like Eriksson.

Exactly. Both players are replacement level at best. You are simply moving real money back and forth to feature cap savings annually
