Team: 2021-22 Custom Team
Initial Creation Date: Dec. 30, 2020
Published: Dec. 30, 2020
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
Tried to do this as best I can. Any thoughts here? Need help on other teams protected lists (ex: had to make a judgement call for COL) and how desperate they are to lose a contract.

ANH: Take Kesler for leaving Guhle open and a 2021 2nd
BUF: 2021 1st for Okposo (Assuming its not top 5)
CGY: 2021 1st for Lucic + Kylington
EDM: 2021 1st for Neal + Kahun
MTL: 2021 3rd for Byron
PHI: 2021 2nd for JVR
TBL: 2021 1st for Tyler Johnson
VAN: 2021 1st + 2021 3rd for Roussel and Eriksson
WSH: 2021 1st + 2022 2nd + 2021 3rd for TJ Oshie

Total Picks
2021: 11 in first 3 rounds
Round 1 (7 picks): SEA(1-6), BUF (6-10), VAN (12-20), CGY (15-22), EDM (15-22), WSH (20-32), TBL (25-32)
Round 2 (2 picks): SEA (33-39), ANH (33-45)
Round 3 (2 picks): SEA (65-71), MTL (75-90)

2022
Round 2: WSH (?)

Roster is built as best I can (there would obviously be FA and trades and such but still)
Taxi squad is the minors.

Neal is bought out (costs just under 2 aav iirc)

Johnson for only a first deal
As a Lightning fan I had it as a 2,5 and Tyler Raddysh

I was thinking the same, but look at your roster on the expansion draft tool. You're losing a big player. I made a judgement call and decided to keep your Dcore together. Can I get your protected list? Are you planning on moving a pick for Seattle to take someone else? I knew the Avs would be the biggest sticking point here.

I would like to keep Lucic. Yes he is on a bad contract and isn't the best player. But he was one of our best players during the playoffs. Us Kylington is a good future defensemen

It’s based on either Sakic and co know he will or plan that Johnson is waiving his NMC, they don’t make the toews trade and extend him losing a top 6 fwd

Landy (will be extended)
Mack
Rantanen
Kadri
Burakovsky

Girard
Makar
Toews

So 2 fwds based on their season will be protect and 2 exposed, jost nuke compher and donskoi

And graves will be exposed

Chances are they make it compher donskoi graves to be selected from so they shed at least 3 million off the books

Teams aren't giving so many top picks just to get rid of semi bad contracts. And another year has gone by and the term of these contracts isn't that much

How sure are you that Johnson will waive? If he does is there a chance Col offers a pick to take him? Either way I agree that it would be Graves exposed over Toews.

Man thats a top 10 pick. I think you'd be hard pressed to get more than that. Also there is no protections on the pick. The draft is literally 2 days after the expansion draft lol. By then we will know where it lands.

I mean, Lucic is a huge drag and if you want to re tool your roster (which you may very well need to) openin up that cap space for a mid to late 1st and a 3rd pair Dman isn't crazy

You've gotta think Dumba and Burakovsky get traded before being left exposed

Again Buffalo will need to get rid of that albatross of a contract and Seattle has the weapon of Space and the ability to take it for you so they would either have to remove the protection or give like an additional third

I don't think I would classify most of these contracts as medium bad. The ones that would fit that description are from teams like Philly, who really need the cap space.

I mean you can say that for a ton of people. All we can do is project with what we know now.

The point of this exercise is to see just how goofy Seattle could get with picks in this upcoming draft if they want to.

If teams are paying you a 1st to take a cap dump, Vegas' history would say there's usually a conditional expansion draft choice attached. Bringing this up for the Edmonton pick specifically. If they are giving Seattle a 1st to take Neal, they are probably choosing a player to give them in the draft too and you can bet its not Kahun.

Also Washington won't have to pay for Seattle to take Oshie. They don't have a lot to leave exposed and Oshie is a PR win for Seattle being a hometown boy and all, not to mention still being a very productive player. Expecting them to give you more than any other team does for much worse contracts is just dreamland thinking.

I agree, its why I have SEA taking Kylington from CGY. I think that EDM would give up Kahun before one of Kassian, RNH, or JP, which is why Kahun is the conditional draft choice.
That contract is pretty bad and EDM needs the cap. I doubt that they could use a mid to late pick and not end up giving up a half decent player.

Hard disagree on Oshie. He has been bad for awhile now and that contract looks attrocious. They're getting something for him and it will be big.

Use the quick protect, it’s not perfect but it’s better than whatever you did.

I didn’t go through every player but Dumba and Logan Brown really stuck out.

Ya, that 30 goal pace scorer over the last 2 seasons has been bad. You're thinking here is demonstrably wrong. Also Kahun is a great player, no way Edmonton gives him up after being gifted him this offseason.

The quick protect is awful. Rather than just saying its better please feel free to say exactly what the issues are. I'd argue my list (even with a few issues) is far superior to QP.

His underlyings are dropping off rapidly and Seattle is a huge analytics team. They aren't taking that contract without serious compensation.

Then Seattle won't get him. Oshie fits in well for Washington and their window of contention. This makes no sense from their point of view. I have a feeling you just want to see the hometown boy play for Seattle and its wishful thinking.

How about a gentlemen bet on this? If Oshie goes with no comp you win. If he goes with comp I win. Sound good?

Don’t get your panties in a bunch, I said it’s mostly correct, and since it has Dumba and Brown protected, more accurate. You want feedback, here’s your feedback, use the quick protect, it’s mostly correct, wait, I already posted that in my first response.

You can't seriously think MIN are protecting Dumba when all indications say they wont. Look at who that will leave exposed.
And don't have a freakout when your vague response with no backing logic is called out. I want feedback, saying "this is bad use the tool that ignores alot" without reasoning why is not feedback.

**** it why not. Who ever wins lets keep it reasonable though.
And just to be clear so we know, its until the end of the 2021-22 season cup is awarded.

Pretty unlikely Ottawa loses Brown. He'll either be protected, or if he hasn't locked up a spot by the end of the season, he'll have already been traded. I'm hoping they'll be able (and more importantly willing) to dump Zaitsev to Seattle for picks/prospects.

Also I can't imagine Anaheim wanting to give up anything to move one year of Kesler's deal, which is insured and LTIR bound. Especially given how badly that worked out for them last time round.

Use the quick protect and see for yourself who Min protects. I don’t agree with every player protected, but it’s at least mostly correct. Wait, where have I seen that before?
