Good signing the only "wrong" thing is that in two years Columbus will have to re-sign Dubois, Domi, Werenski, Jones and both goalies at the same time. They should have give him longer term and money to avoid that since they had the capspace to do it.

I'm not thrilled with the term. But you know what, they got control after 2 years. They need to wrap him up long term for sure.

To play devil's advocate, the cap is also going to go up by then, making it easier to get at least 3 of the 6 locked down. The Jackets also received some draft insurance with Domi in case that he walks in UFA.

Wow !!! This is insane work by Kekäläinen, for now !!!
Sure, Dubois deserved a long-term contract. But, his GM basically has locked up his first two centers under 6 million for the next two years.
They also have 4 million in cap space. A Roslovic trade might be in the works, since he is a Columbus native, is pretty versatile (which Tortorella likes) and will receive way under 4 million dollars according to his market value.

Gonna be an expensive offseason in 2022 for CBJ, Werenski Jones(I think) Dubois, Domi Korpisalo(I think) and more

I'm surprised how many people like this deal.
Its good for the next 2 years I guess, but I think CLB missed out on a major opportunity to sign PLD to a long term deal at a more reasonable $ number than what he'll re-sign in 2 years for.
Its obvious he doesn't want to be there.

Like the contemporaneous Vince Dunn signing, a lower number than we all expected. This is good for Columbus in the short term, but doesn't bode well for their future -- he'll have arbitration rights at the end of this contract even if he is still a RFA.

I think that the years closer to UFA are more valuable than the years further away from it. Looks weird, sure, but it makes some sense in that way. I'm also pretty sure that the reason why Columbus received a 3rd with Domi is because both teams knew that he wanted to get to UFA as quickly as possible.

I wouldn’t say that those years are any more valuable than other years, it’s probably just a case of the closer a player gets to UFA the more leverage they get.

I’m not so sure about the 3rd, since Anderson was asking for either a 1 year deal (UFA) or max term anyways. It sounds like the 3rd was added because a Monahan for Anderson deal was close to happening soon before that, so Anderson’s market value was high.

Solid contract. CBJ are going to be a tough team to beat this year. Cap space to make some more moves.

In general Columbus has 2 years to go all in and win the Metro and the cup because those 2 year 5-5.5 mill contracts will catch up as even when Dubinsky and Folingos money come off the books extending Werenski, Jones, Bjorkstrand, PLD, one or both goalies, and potentially even Domi will be expensive.

They drafted him 3rd before the ”obvious” choice, they carefully developed him in the 1C role, and they’ve made it to the playoffs twice during it.. and he wants out?? Sounds bs to me.

The cap is rumored to be flat for the next 4 years do to the high escrow and you know covid and zero fans in all the arenas.

4 years is absolute worst-case scenario. That's if the vaccine is ineffective and people are still getting COVID at massive rates by the end of 2021 (I wholeheartedly doubt this outcome). Best case is 2 seasons of flat cap.

Well 2 to 4 years. Everything that I read is minimal 3 years of a flat cap for the players to pay back the 50/50 to the owners.

Torts basically threatened Werenski not to hold out into training camp. I'm sure PLD got the message loud and clear.

I would've loved to see a Nico Hischier type deal here for both sides. I'm not really sure why that didn't happen here.

This deal is a great one for CBJ, but it creates issues long term. The high priced second year will inflate the inevitable qualifying offer, and in turn the starting point for negotiations next time around. It’s the reason CBJ were hoping to get him signed long term here - avoid his price going up, while also getting a bit of a discount with the cap staying flat the next two years. Instead PLD gets to sit out the flat cap and re-negotiate right as the market is allowed to open up again.

More concerning for me is, like people have pointed out. that during the same offseason, CBJ will have Dubois, Domi, Boone, Jones, Werenski, Elvis, and Korpi all hitting FA.

Gonna be a fun one 🤦‍♂️
