Tatar for Bennet

Created by: Billy739
Team: 2020-21 Montreal Canadiens
Initial Creation Date: Jan. 2, 2021
Published: Jan. 2, 2021
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
Moving Byron didnt work out
New Approach is Moving Tatar

This will require Lehkonen to put up more then the 27-31 points he usually does.
That said come playoffs despite the huge margin between Tatar/Lehkonen's numbers in 82 games . Come Playoffs the last 5 years its Tatar with 7 points in 23 games and Lehkonen with 8 points in 16 games .

If Lehkonen-Danault-Gallagher can lock down 2nd line this could actually work out well giving MTL's a Defensive line who Forechecks creating scoring chances with this hard work.

Tatar is ideal for a team like EDM because of his cap but also because he's solid enough to keep up with that teams speed. That said i'm making the trade with CGY because i think in that system this trade makes everyone a winner.

Tatar for CGY gives them a defensive forward who can put up 58-61 points.
Playing 2nd line with Backlund and Tkachuk could be great for him as he has someone to win the draws while Tkachuk cycles pucks out of the corners and drives the net. (Similar to the dynamic Danault-Gallagher shared with him for 2 seasons)
Trades
MTL
  1. Bennett, Sam
  2. 2023 2nd round pick (CGY)
Additional Details:
-Bennet's totals from rookie season 36pts w/ 15 TOI
Bennet's totals from last season 12pts w/ 12 TOI

-He's still young ,Wins faceoffs , Hits Hard and doesnt turn over pucks making him an ideal 4th line guy but a far cry from the top 5 OA pick he was.

-CGY gets the chance to add Tatar while turning a 2023 2nd into a possible 2021 2nd while doing so.
CGY
  1. Tatar, Tomas
  2. 2021 3rd round pick (MTL)
Additional Details:
-Conditonal 3rd becomes a 2nd in 2021 if Bennet make ECF with MTL playing 50% or more games

-MTL gets slightly bigger player who plays with more Grit who can put up 10-15 goals as a bottom 6 guy winning 53-54% of his faceoffs the past 3 years

Tatar's a UFA soon anyways and we wont re-sign him.
Bennet could be a role player in our bottom 6 for another 5 years if he transitions anywhere near as good as Byron did after arriving from CGY

Awesome
i was a little worried because although he fits in
Whether or not you'd be willing to move the cap to upgrade Bennet to a Tatar was a big worry from my POV

That's usually where i get screwed on these trades with other fanbases.

I know we like to trade players who will become UFA, but we are going all in this year, so that’s a downgrade. I don’t think we’ll make a trade to downgrade the roster we have right now

how ?

Tatar in playoffs = less points in 3 playoff seasons then Bennett last year playing less minutes

Explain how this makes us worse when we got better players who step up in the off season even though they play less minutes

I know but Tatar is still way better than Bennett, only Suzuki KK and Armia scored during the playoffs. Tatar Gallagher Lehkonen Byron Danault Drouin Chiarot Kulak, no one scored. I think Bergevin is done for this offseason, training camp are starting tomorrow if I’m not mistaken or he’s doing is annual conference tomorrow

Tatar doesnt show up in the playoffs really atleast not yet. Put a Tkachuk or Lucic on his wing creating space through violence and maybe
I dont see any logic for arguing to keep a less productive , older , smaller , more expensive forward you cant re-sign.
(especially when its over 5 minutes of ice time that is defining your perceived value between the 2)

Bennett can be a factor just like Tom Wilson was in WSH Cup or Paquette was in TBL Cup
Or like Thorton was for Claude Juliens 2011 Cup

Every NHL team to win a cup in the past 9 years needed a legit bottom line
look at BOS,LAK,CHI,PIT,WSH,STL and TBL rosters the year the won
None were playing an Evans or Poehling on their bottom lines thats for sure
(maybe the teams they beat were but the champs werent )

I wouldn't do this at all. Habs are all in this year. Don't trade last years best player.....

If you want to cut a bit of cap, move Kulak and/or Weal with a draft pick (if needed) for AHL players, etc.
If you want a 4th line "Thompson" replacement, trade a 4th/5th to any team willing to do so.

I feel like your trying to correct a problem that isn't there. You could achieve what your trying to do in essence, with a fraction of the risk involved if you really want to.
