I think you are close to the final roster. Specialy Juulsen being on the roster. I think he is fully ready. I think Ouellet is a better option than Hainsley. I don't thing Winnepeg would trade a recently signed UFA to an opponent in the same division. Why don't you just put Kulak on the taxi quad ?

I think you're seriously overvaluing Kulak and undervaluing Byron. Although Kulak looked great in the playoffs he only looked good with Petry. Byron is a perrenial 20+ goals scorer and swiss army knife of a player. He kills penalties and can easily go up and down the lineup, not to mention to the breakaway speed. Kulak is a dime a dozen defenceman. Any one of Romanov, Mete, Fleury, Juulsen replaces him without much loss if any. Moving him frees up space and management issues.

Kulak likely doesn't clear waivers and we lose him for nothing. You make a good point about Thompson being recently signed. How bad does Winnepeg need an LD? Kulak is definitely better than Beaulieu and if Winnipeg doesnt trade Roslovic he plays 4th line?

Why don't Montreal give Romanov some time in Laval and keep Kulak who was great in the last playoff.

Or y’all undervaluing him because is name is Brett Kulak ( unknown not unknown anymore ). Yes, he is really good with Petry, and Chiarot is good with Weber. Sending Byron to the Taxi Squad doesn’t mean he won’t play, just bring him back in the line up after 1-2 games

I agree with Byron on the taxi squad. He will clear waivers. This is what Mtl need this season. Some deepnest in their roster.

So Frolik plays ahead of Byron (an assistant captain)? If he comes into the lineup in 1-2 games how do you stay cap compliant? Who goes to the taxi squad? Am I missing something?

According to assistant captain, Byron would be escrow exept on the taxi squad. This is not an issue. Taxi squad does't count on salary cap issues.

I don’t know how the Taxi Squad works outside ( to go on the Taxi Squad, you need to clear waivers ( not if you are exempt ( exemple : Fleury ) ), and you can practice with the team etc ). But when you bring a guy on the Taxi Squad to your roster, is caphit just come back ? Or more the season goes, more we’ll get capspace so Byron could play ? I don’t know if that make any sense sorry lol

What does escrow except mean? He clears waivers, goes to the taxi squad. They bring him back in 2 games, his full cap hot doesn't count?

I'm happy to keep Kulak. I'm just under the impression we can't stay cap compliant. If you want Romanov and Juulsen on the team.

I'm under the impression, his cap hit counts when you bring him back. There must some loopholes and something I'm missing. If we can keep Kulak, all the better. I actually like him. But if I'm choosing between Byron and Kulak I'm choosing Byron.

Mtl can work on a 22 players roster and be cap compliant if they put Weal on the taxi squad. The cap hit for Weal, would be $350,000. The same amount that if they would put him in the AHL.The issue with the taxi squad is that the team has to put on waiver the players. When a team beleive that no team is interested in a player... his salary, I think the best move would be to move the players that no team would claim on the waivers.

Trading Kulak is great, but why would Winnipeg trade Thompson before he even plays a game for them?

As for all of the Byron/Kulak stuff:

I think that Byron should absolutely be on our normal lineup. If everyone’s ok with it and you want to send him to the taxi-squad on off-days as a paper transaction to save cap space, go ahead. However that might pose a few issues with waivers or Byron’s mental state, so this might not work.

As for trading Kulak, I think we need to do it. We need to make sure that we are not only cap compliant this year, but next year as well, when we need cap space more. So we need to have breathing room for the inevitable performance bonuses for KK/Suzuki/Romanov. To do that, we need to make a trade. While Kulak is great with Petry, it’s unlikely that he’ll play with Petry this year, because if he was the habs wouldn’t have signed Edmundson to the contract they did. And I also think that if he’s playing on the 3rd pairing, Kulak’s extra $1 million isn’t worth the difference between him and his replacement, which would be Mete. Mete is cheaper, as well as being more flexible since he can play both sides. And even if we get an injury or 2, we have an abundance of NHL-level D who could easily be nearly as good as Kulak would be.

If Byron was sent down as a paper transaction on all of the days we aren’t playing games, that would save approximately $500K more than if he spent the entire season on an NHL roster.

Totally agree. He's expendable and has some value in a trade. Get midround pick we use at the trade deadline to bolster for the playoffs.

Chiarot Weber
Romanov Petry
Edmunson Mete
Ouellette Juulsen
Fleury

Don't need Kulak
