Quoting: Bdawwwgy1
Hes better than Monahan and Duchene.
Youre also high on those prospects (and I say that as more of a prospect guy than an NHL guy). Foote is more projected as a middle 6 guy, Merkley as a "b prospect" is just genuinely hilarious, and Shakir is extremely controversial and divisive so who knows if CBJ even likes him. That first would be lotto protected surely. Yoy don't think any team, especially NYR and MTL could top that offer?
Also again its just incredibly dumb to use pts as an argument with no context
I'm a Sens fan so prospects have basically been my life for the last couple years lol. I think you're undervaluing Foote, he's barely 20 and he has a lethal shot, I think he'll turn out to be at least a solid 20-30 goal guy on the 2nd line. Merkley I'll admit I'm personally not very high on but he hasn't been terrible in the AHL. It's still possible he could breakout (injuries have really derailed him), but even if he doesn't, he's probably good enough for a depth role now (like an Alan Quine type of guy, filled in for the Flames once in a while and was okay for soft usage on the 4th line). I personally had Mukhamadullin going around mid-2nd, but his package does have high upside. He was a stretch for the top 20 due to his floor and ceiling being hella far apart, but he's not a bad prospect, and likely wouldn't have fallen into the 3rd no matter what. CBJ's scouting is weird though, they had Chinakhov top 10 when most people had him in the 3rd at the earliest, maybe they really like Shakir too. Regardless, the most important piece is the 1st. Even if it's top 3 protected it should still be a top 6 or 7 pick, assuming they don't win the lottery. NJD is gonna get eaten alive in the East division this year. Buffalo added Hall and Staal and I have them finishing 7th, Johnsson and Murray aren't helping lol. So the worst way of looking at this is it's basically a good prospect, a top 10 pick, two mid-2nds (one already drafted), and a depth piece, which is a bigger package than basically anyone has gotten recently (better than the Hall package, that's for sure).
As for points not telling the whole story, that's true, but it's a pretty good indicator for a guy you want to be your 1C and lead the offense. He's fine defensively but not outstanding, and doesn't play on the PK. He may have further offensive upside, but his numbers from his first three years are worse than Duchene's and Monahan's, and only slightly better than Larkin's. He's not a top 20 centre for sure. Maybe even not top 25 or 30. Numbers aren't everything but if you can't create offense at an elite level then you shouldn't be considered a top tier offensive 1C. He's young and may grow into that, but there's a reason his bridge is 5mil and not around 7mil like Point, Tkachuk, etc. (yeah they signed an extra year, but his QO would still be lower than their cap hit if you count that as the 3rd year, and he'd need to bump up to 9mil to make the same amount over that time frame, which I highly doubt he'll get unless he puts up back to back years around a point per game, which he might, who knows, but even if he does that still leaves him in that Monahan/Larkin/Duchene tier lol, not a Barzal/Aho/Pettersson level).
I also agree that several teams could top this offer. That doesn't mean they should if he's not worth it. I give it a couple months before people on here are trading him for a 3rd liner and a 2nd, look at how people view Laine lol, crazy how people undervalue goals when that's literally the most important thing in hockey.
