If JT never came

Created by: dzad96
Team: 2020-21 Toronto Maple Leafs
Initial Creation Date: Jan. 5, 2021
Published: Jan. 5, 2021
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
I think the team would be in better position without JT.

You either have: JT

OR

Kadri, some 4-5 mil D man (Gardiner maybe), and a 2-3 mil 3rd line center (Eakin maybe).

What would you rather have? I know what I'd rather have.
Trades
1.
COL
  1. Kerfoot, Alexander
Additional Details:
Just reversing the Kadri trade because it never would have happened without JT.
2.
TOR
  1. 2021 7th round pick (SJS)
SJS
  1. Tavares, John
Additional Details:
I think SJ was second in the running, maybe not, doesn't matter for the sake of this.
3.
TOR
  1. Gardiner, Jake
Additional Details:
Would have had the cap to resign Gardiner. I think Dubas would have, but maybe not. If not Gardiner, some other 4-5 mil D guy.
CAR
  1. 2021 7th round pick (SJS)
4.
BUF
  1. Dermott, Travis
Additional Details:
Would have added some other 3rd line C the year they added Jt, either trade or free agency. Not necessarily Eakin but someone of his Caliber.

Swap Gardiner for someone else with similar cap like Tanev, put him on the second pair instead. Still no? I don't think JT is worth 6.5 more than Kadri is my main point here. I'd take Kadri and 6.5 mil in cap space flexibility over JT.

That’s what I was thinking. Gardiner and Brodie, plus Reilly is too many OFD IMO. Tavev would be a better fit in this hypothetical scenario.

Would Brown still be around? I can’t remember if Tavares was why he was shipped off

Brown was shipped off to get out from under the Zaitsev contract. You can argue about the Marleau and Kadri trades being related to the Tavares signing, but Zaitsev was a long term black hole on the team and 1 year of Ceci and Brown was a sacrifice you had to make.

I find these posts hilarious. Here is the most likely scenario: If the Leafs don't sign Tavares, the leafs struggle to make the playoffs in 2018-2019 season. More people continue to call for Kadri's head. Kadri get's traded regardless for a change of scenery. Leafs are in a situation in 2019-2020 where they don't have either Tavares or Kadri.
No to Gardiner.

JT is definitely worth it. Who wants Kadri to take stupid penalties and suspensions in the playoffs anyways?

Marleau and Zaitsev were moved because they were bad contracts signed by Lou. Those were mistakes, JT wasn't.

Yeah, not even close. They made the playoffs without him the year before just fine, and all of their young players would have been better the following year regardless of JT coming or not. That's a trash opinion.

Actually in 2016-2017 they just squeaked into the playoffs. Had career or near career years from Bozak and JVR. Had several young kids shine and over perform. And Freddie stood on his head all year. I think he even played close to 70 games - it was insane. The salary it was going to take to pay Bozak and JVR (which would have been a large mistake) was used to pay JT.

Correct. in 2017-2018 (the playoffs before tavares signed) they were a 100 point team without him. I think you're missing a year in your thinking when Tavares came. They made playoffs 2 years in a row without him and improved vastly over those two years. So to think they would be significantly worse than the 100 points they had without JT is not a good opinion.

You're absolutely right. I forgot/joined to seasons in my head. 2017-2018 was the first Marleau year correct? They all played decent that year and JVR had his crazy goal scoring year. My point is still that JVR and Bozak salary is replaced by JT.

That is correct yes. Actually had a solid year through and through just a game 7 collapse. I know what you're saying, But my point is, JVR Bozak money could have been used on a D and a 3C and just keeping Kadri. The argument is basically you either have JT or a solid 2C a 3C and a 2nd pair D. I like that bag of 3 over what JT brings.

If they didn't sign JT, they would have what resigned JVR and Bozak? Not likely so they would have been weaker than the year before. Hence no playoffs

Except right now they have a decent 3C in Kerfoot and a good top 4 and solid depth beyond it. Right now they are much better than when we had Kadri.

Who? This is all just needless. JT was and is the best option for the team. Kadri drove himself out of town.

Okay so we disagree on Kadri fine. You're not arguing anything of substance just stating your opinion over and over. I get it. You didn't like Kadri. I don't care.

Because it doesn't matter, and your argument is they could have signed someone. That isn't an argument, it's just the usual Kadri has grit so he's awesome nonsense that did us no good when we had him. Who could we have had, JT and we got him and he's a top 15 centre in the game and Dubas has put together a good roster around him and the core. Just stop this crap.
