Letters rarely represent leadership anyway, so it doesn't really matter. Tavares, Matthews, Marner and Rielly are the public face of the team. The leaders in the room are whoever the leaders in the room are.

You do realize often times the biggest voices of the room aren’t always the captain or alternates. It’s the same thing as great players are rarely great coaches. Not many fans realize this and if you haven’t played on a team you may realize this less; often times the most heavy voice in the room that carries weight isn’t the C.

Good player =/= good coach
Star player =/= leader

You can have a C to be the leader of the franchise/ face of the organization but it doesn’t mean their aren’t better leaders in the room. Nor does it mean not having a C means you aren’t a leader.

Many NHL teams will acknowledge there are leaders in the room who are not star players or C’s/ A’s

muzzin is a good voice in the locker room but is he C material no. Tavares had 9 years experience as captain with the islanders. As for A's Marner deserved it, Rielly especially deserved it as did Matthews as he is the star center of the team. If one more A was granted Muzzin would have probs got it but lets be real Hyman would have got it.

Kinda silly, that a knowledgable hockey fan would ever consider what an entertainer (Friedman in this case) would say as being factual. It's show time, and all these talking heads are trying to up themselves for their apparent "inside knowledge" just so they can get more hits on their websites.
