how does Edmonton pass on both Zegras and Podkolzin, 2 of their biggest needs

Blew my mind as a prospects guy that they took...Broberg there. Zegras, Caufield and Boldy were the obvious choice there

Don’t remind me haha. I wanted Zegras when he was available, but if you know Holland he works from his defence out. I still think Broberg is gonna be a good player though.

Idk either other than they fell in lust over his skating.
Zegras was the pick. Not Mole Smallfield.

I agree. Zegras was my choice as well.

As for the question posed here, I think Edmonton declines. Podkolzin has done absolutely nothing since he his draft year, no progression at all. That's not a good sign... on top of that, the Oilers are expecting Puljujarvi to jump straight into the lineup this year and perhaps anchor an outscoring 3rd line, whereas Podkolzin is nowhere near ready for the NHL. Long-term is anyone's guess, but right now this trade doesn't make sense for Edmonton and would be rejected.

He did the same thing the year before in Detroit when he took Zadina over Hughes.

He’s a good GM, but sometimes I think some players are the obvious pick.

He brought his head of scouting to Edmonton too... I don't dislike Broberg, I think he'll be good. I just think Zegras will be the better player. Overall, I think the 2019 draft will prove to be a good one, it looks like there will be some gems found in the later rounds.

Pretty happy with the 2020 draft so far. BPA (IMO) in the 1st and again some gems in the later rounds. Way too early takes I know, but early returns are pretty good thoughout the lists.

Tyler Wright is “interesting” in what he values. I’m not the biggest fan but 2017 really ticked me off during the draft. I loved Savoie that late.

I agree he is a good GM. His last 2 drafts in Detroit he couldn't pass up 2 players that had fallen out of the top 3. That being said the players he took after the 1st pick of the draft like Lindstrom, Veleno, Berggren and McIsaac all have a lot of potential. Hronek was a 3rd round pick and I don't know if AA will ever figure things out again but he was a 4th round pick. There are also several other mid draft picks that didn't stay in Detroit but still found a good deal of success with other teams.

Post-first-round hits are something Oilers fans aren't used to, so this is pretty exciting. Although Chiarelli's scouting team did well in 2015, so it's not JUST Holland, but there appears to be lots of great picks in the late rounds in both 2019 and 2020.

2015
4 - Caleb Jones
5 - Ethan Bear
6 - John Marino

Strong candidates for NHL contracts

2019
2 - Raphael Lavoie*
3 - Ilya Konovalov
4 - Matej Blumel
7 - Maxim Denezhkin

2020
4 - Carter Savoie
5 - Tyler Tullio
5 - Maxim Berezkin
