hes the backup for 2020-2021 season than retiring. 2021-2022 is next season lul and Miller will be retired by then. Stolarz makes the most sense as he has NHL experience and is the cheapest option.

Where in pipeline is Lukas Dostal then? I could see him as a backup next season, not sure about that after this signing.

Yup. This season will be his farewell tour. One of the best USA Goalies ever!

I'd be pretty surprised if he started fewer than 5 NHL games this season. There's gonna be injuries. He's pretty decent, too.

I think this I also a move to have them meet the minimum unprotected requirements for the expansion draft

Exactly this. They need someone to expose.

I vote yes just because the Ducks will need a goalie to expose in the off season for Seattle. Only reason I voted yes. To much for an AHL goalie but can bury the entire contract in the minors with zero cap implications. Still to much for an AHL goalie in my opinion.

I don't think there's gonna be a taxi squad next year. He already has a one-way contract with a $750K salary this season.

Those who say this is too much for an AHL goalie aren't seeing the full picture. Anaheim needs a goalie to expose to Seattle, as others have noted, Ryan Miller is probably going to retire at the end of this season so Anaheim will need a backup in 2021-2022 and Stolarz is the prime internal candidate for that slot, and the facts that there will be several better goalies available (Jake Allen, Anton Khudobin and Vancouver's, to name just 3) and a couple of nice young Ducks forwards or LDs to choose from make the chances of Seattle selecting Stolarz pretty slim. So this is a very good move for the future.

He might be the backup next year. Like others have noted, this is primarily a move for expansion purposes. Not that Stolarz is bad or anything but I just haven't seen enough from him to feel confident he can hold down that role for a whole season. And don't let his one-way status fool you either. A lot of Gulls are on one-way deals. It might be the only way to convince veterans to live in San Diego considering how expensive the area is and how high taxes are in this state. And in a normal year, the Gulls draw extremely well for an AHL team and probably have the means to afford such a high payroll.

Just FYI, if you are on the taxi squad and you have a two-way deal you are paid your AHL salary.
