he clearly signed the best deal on the table, which means NJ over paid.
Hi troll. You clearly haven't seen that he's been the most consistent and reliable Devils D-men for the past several years. He hustles and probably has lead the D-men in TOI. No, he won't put up mad points, but he plays a shutdown role.
That's easily worth more than $4.5M/year for a 29yo D-man in his prime in any other year. Hence he took the 1 year deal to to stay where he's comfortable and knows he can prove his worth on 7/1/21.

His offense is actually pretty good, ranking him at a borderline top pairing defenseman offesnively by per game (http://www.nhl.com/stats/skaters?reportType=season&seasonFrom=20172018&seasonTo=20192020&gameType=2&position=D&filter=gamesPlayed,gte,40&sort=pointsPerGame&page=0&pageSize=100) shockingly enough
Over the last 3 years he has 0.43 PPG tied with Morrissey and a hair behind Keith and Provorov (0.44) and Shattenkirk (0.45) and a hair better than Goligoski and Slavin (0.42).
This is an insane bargain. It truly makes no sense. He is a good, but not great 2nd pairing defenseman who can play both sides and is in his prime. How did he get a 1 year 2 mil contract?

hi troll, everyone on here is saying what we already know. He'll be moved at TDL again. Which means the only reason he took the deal was money. So that tells you what other people were paying, less than this.
Exactly the type of low risk signing any team with cap space should make. Best case he's helping the Devils challenge for a playoff spot, likely case he gets them a 2nd or 3rd rounder at the TDL. No-brainer.
This signing signifies that Ty Smith is not ready to be an every day NHL’er yet. A little disappointing considering he was the last D cut in ‘18-‘19 as an 18 y. o.
