Half Way Point

Created by: Wqrrior
Team: 2020-21 Los Angeles Kings
Initial Creation Date: Jan. 7, 2021
Published: Jan. 7, 2021
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
NOTE:

I have LA's bottom 3 lines run nearly equivalent. I like these pairings, but time will tell which one will run what ice time.
Trades
LAK
  1. Engvall, Pierre
  2. 2021 1st round pick (TOR)
  3. 2022 4th round pick (TOR)
Additional Details:
AA makes Iafallo and his fantastic cap hit / playstyle expendable. This guy is LA's ticket to a Coleman - mimic return of a first.

I think Toronto bites with their new annual trend of a LA trade, this time for Iafallo as a grit/middle six playoff addition

'* 4th upgrades to 2nd if Iafallo extends in TOR or is traded'

This kind of condition isn't allowed anymore.

I would do 4th becomes 2nd if Leafs make it to finals or resign him

to bad conditions are not allowed this season for trades

I for one find the ask of a 1st steep. Hard to say what the market will look like, but Dubas isn't doing that without contract control.

And given that Hyman wants to stay on Toronto (and on record saying he will take less to do so), along with Soup and Robertson, not sure I even see a fit on LW.

And we won't get into the RW, as Iafallo for me is a solid 2nd line winger. He is buried.

As a rental Iafallo would be great, but that ask is going to be too much.

Looking at the list of pending UFAs that should garner a 1st if they’re traded, as good as Iafallo is, I don’t know if he’ll get it. Supply and demand is my concern.

Pending UFAs: Getzlaf, Hall, Tatar, Palmieri, Gusev, Johansson, Granlund, Danault.

Some might be kept as “own rentals”, and it excludes probably 8 players that are on teams that should be locks for the playoffs, as well as defencemen, but there’s only so many teams that will be contenders and looking for top 6 or top 9 help.

Seems like a lot. No point in reiterating the points others have made.

Getting a player like this at 1.25M on a cap strapped team is where the value comes from. There aren't many other players available that are that low on cap and who fill multiple team needs. "OK" players on bargain cap hits are the big thing these days.

Also, the Engvall contract was a mistake. It's almost negative value as stands. Else valueless.

Value like you are asking for Iaffolo comes from term not cap space. A 2 mil cap hit is close to nothing by the time the deadline comes around. With no extra season, he won't get anything resembling Coleman's return.

Agreed. I like Iafallo, but I don't think he brings back a first, even minus Engvall or the second pick.

Yep, I think this is why Iafallo will take a discount, just like Kempe did.

Coleman wasn’t a rental and is better. Half a season of iaffalo gets like 2 seconds IMO.

Coleman was so valuable to Tampa because he had future years of control at a time they really needed it. Does Iafallo have more years at that cap hit?

The leafs have their wings fairly filled with with mikheyev on a 2 year deal, Robertson should be taking two top 9 spots at a cheap price and Marner and Nylander as the other two.

Between a Vesey/Barbanov resigning, and enough winger prospects I doubt they feel the need.

Now it you had a dman signed for some term below market value we'd be talking

In all fairness, Hyman is playing RW to start the season. I don't see Toronto in the market for Iafallo though.

Iafallo will cost less than 3.75M on a contract extension IMO.

Goodrow got a 1st, but Iafallo is way better than him offensively. While he is a rental, he won't get more than 3.75M on a long term contract extension.

But that has no value. He'll be a UFA. Anyone could sign that. It was a unique circumstance with Coleman and Barclay

Ya but the leafs don’t have that money. He would be a rental in a shortened season. Valuable but I don’t know if a team gives up a first. Leafs tend to target that extra year: muzzin & Campbell.
