No chance I’m doing Krebs and Tuch.

Tuch and a 2nd isn’t terrible but taking on Dub doesn’t justify using Krebs at all

Usually the team with less cap space is the team that benefits from the LTIR addition. I can only assume that's the reason he's included. Not because Columbus needs to get rid of Dubinsky.

There is no benefit of taking an LTIR contract. It’s actually the opposite as you don’t accrue cap space as you’re over the cap ceiling. Additionally, insurance (if the contract is insured) only covers up to 80% of the salary so you’re actually pay cash for a negative asset.

Wouldn't it allow Vegas to surpass the salary cap by the amount of his contract above where they are currently at?

Yes, but think of it this way. Let’s say Vegas is at 80M without Dubinsky’s contract (let’s round down to 5M for simple math) that brings Vegas to 85M or 3.5M over the salary cap thus not letting them accrue space for the trade deadline. Now you put Dubinsky on LTIR and that brings you to compliance back at your original cap amount of 80M. So effectively you’re paying for a contract that gives you absolutely no benefit and doesn’t let you accrue space for a trade deadline acquisition.

Ok let me get this straight (because i seem to think I understand LTIR when in reality I still don't after all these years squinty smile ) If Vegas wanted to get the max benefit of this LTIR they would have needed to have a cap of 75.64M?

It’s all good LTIR can be a bit complicated. If you add a 5.85M contract and then subtract it then you’re just right back where you started thus no benefit. A good visualization tool is creating an ACGM and then acquiring an LTIR contract like Zetterberg or Dubinsky and looking at the cap figures before the trade and when the contract is on LTIR.

Ok so make this work in my head cuz its still fuzzy, give me a scenario where any current team acquires a contract for the LTIR benefit. Im not crazy right? Teams have acquired players from other teams for the purpose of using the LTIR to their advantage, right?

The only recent time I can recall benefiting from LTIR is when Toronto acquired Clarkson to give them a little cushion to sign Marner during the season. They were under the cap pre-trade and Marner was still unsigned and available cap space isn’t a quick formula as you have to adjust daily and injuries/paper trades occur effecting the figures. Here’s an article that discusses this a little bit.

Thanks!

So if Vegas was under the cap pre Dubinsky trade, the same way Toronto was pre Clarkson trade, wouldn't the same apply if they then had a player they wanted to use that cap space on? Lets say they wanted to sign Grabner as a UFA as Toronto wanted with Marner as an RFA.
