Nudge

Created by: Zmach
Team: 2021-22 Edmonton Oilers
Initial Creation Date: Jan. 8, 2021
Published: Jan. 8, 2021
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
Cap friendly doesn't have an advanced contract function but as per CBA I believe you can load up the first year of the contract and have it count towards the cap as long as the years following the first are lower cap hit.

Consensus is RNH for 6 years @ 6.75 AAV
so given the oilers projected cap situation down the road and given that we would like to resign Mcdavid for what would be year 6 of nudge's contract for presumably league maximum 15 Million I would do as Follows:

Year 1) 12Million cap hit
year 2) 7.125 Cap hit
year 3) 7.125 Cap hit
year 4) 7.125 Cap hit
year 5) 7.125 Cap hit
year 6) UFA

Im pretty sure this isnt a thing. Youre probably thinking of Nylanders deal where he was signed part way into the season as an RFA. Im 99% sure cap hit cant fluctuate like this for a UFA signing

It's not uncommon for players to have their salary like that the first year on a big contract just usually teams want the cap hit to be averaged out. I want the full cap hit of 12 million next year and 7.125 the following 4 years so that his contract expires at the same time as Mcdavid so that we can resign him and Draisaitl. if nudge is given a 6 year contract and the cap stays as flat as they are saying its not possible unless you buy him out on the last year.

You can front load actual $$$$$ in a contract, but a the cap remains the same for throughout the contract.

How did Nylander's contract work like that then? Does it make a difference if the team drafted him?

It can't. You can front load a deal with signing bonuses and have a lower base salary for the year (the way the Leafs do a lot). But you can't change the cap hit.

Also in a flat cap world, most teams won't be able to afford big signing bonuses right away. They're gonna start backloading deals instead which is gonna screw them if they ever wanna trade and or buy out a guy

His cap was high in the first year because his "season" was shortened because he signed late and miss two months of regular season. Normally his 7m cap hit was spread over 6 months, shortened season he only played four months approximately . So his cap hit for that one season 7m X 6m divided by 4m (approximately) for 10.5m

You can get around the rules and structure cap hit like that by signing two separate contracts. For a normal contract, a player can sign a contract extension one full year before the contract expires. However if the initial contract is 1 year like in your scenario, the player must wait until some date in January (I think) for a regular season.

So for Nuge, he could just sign a 1 year deal and then make a handshake deal agreeing to an extension that would be signed in January.

The agents usually backload the deals so they are buyout proof.

That's why I'm saying it makes it tough to buyout. But because of the pandemic teams can't afford front loaded deals right now. Maybe a handful of teams could, but not Edmonton

Cap wise they can afford it. It’s shown above. Money wise they can also afford it, Darryl Katz is the most supporting owner in the league financial wise.

Some of the media has calculated that he’s been spending about 10 million more than other teams on scouting and with paying all the dead cap and buyouts he has been a champ.
