Finding a partner for Burns

Created by: OutCold13
Team: 2020-21 San Jose Sharks
Initial Creation Date: Jan. 9, 2021
Published: Jan. 9, 2021
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Trades
SJS
  1. Dermott, Travis
Additional Details:
Dermott needs opportunity and likely get lost for nothing in expansion so I have to believe Leafs would be willing to move him.

Dermott played a defensive game and if paired with Burns it would allow Burns to do Burns things and not worry as much about his defensive end.
TOR
  1. Pasichnuk, Brinson
  2. 2022 2nd round pick (SJS)
Additional Details:
Pasichnuk is a nice 2 way defenseman who is expansion exempt plus a 2nd rounder should be fair.

Who do you think Seattle takes next summer...from SJS? Do you think it might be possible you're giving up a 2nd just to lose Dermott to Seattle

Dermott would be protected in this scenario, Burns would be exposed.

Leave Burns exposed. Without payment Seattle likely isn't taking him.

Looks like the Leafs will have to expose both Holl and Dermot. One will taken likely so the Leafs keep the other. If Dermot is traded the Holl is taken, the Leafs lose two competent NHL Dmen instead of one.
Don't know why the author said "Dermot needs a chance." Past two seasons he has played 17 minutes a game

The other option is if nothing works out you pay a 1st to get Seattle to take Burns.

I said it because he can't crack Leafs top 4 with Muzzin and Reilly ahead of him and he will probably be scratched plenty this year.

If I were SJS...I'd consider playing Burns exactly enough games at winger to make him eligible as a forward.

????? Teams play 6 Dmen a game and with injuries teams need 7 or 8 Dmen during the course of the year . Reilly, Muzzin, Brodie and Holl, probably play the most minutes. That's four. Dermot sure likes the Leafs 5th best to me n to me, unless Bogosian plays like he did with Tampa and the unknown Lehotonen adjusts to the NHL quickly.

As a Leafs fan, I would accept this trade. It is fair. Their depth on the left is great for a few more seasons. Getting someone younger plus a 2nd, I am okay with this.

Since when do NHL teams play 6 Dmen? Pal I'm better than that please don't talk to me like I don't know what a NHL roster is composed of. I've shown you respect in the past and would appreciate the same.
Now back to business you also have Sandin who is ready for a shot Liljegren and I have the Sharks sending the Leafs another young defenseman who is ready to crack a NHL line up. A bit of a log jam you will have to admit. I understand your reasoning for wanting to keep Dermott. Perhaps Dubas feels the same as you but I think he could look at Dermott as a bit redundant and be willing to move him.

Wow, how can you say teams don't play 6 Dmen? Usually lineup is 3 sets of 2, every game, all the time. Leafs when healthy at LHD, Reilly 24 minutes due to PP time, Muzzin 20 minutes, and Dermot are whoever 16 minutes. That's pretty standard for all NHL teams. I'll agree with your Sandin assessment, but Liljegren is right now the 4th RHD.

Really , how do you think NHL teams divide the 120 minutes a game played by defensemen?

Pal that was sarcasm on my part. I do know NHL teams generally deploy 3 pairs. Tampa in the playoffs actually ran 7 defensemen and 11 forwards, food for thought.

I also know Liljegren is on the right side I only placed him in the discussion to help alleviate your fear of losing Dermott and Holl, which you expressed concern over in your original post.
As far as how minutes are decided varies from coach to coach. But in general your top pair gets the most minutes in part because they are the teams best and they often see the majority of special teams. Anyway I'll put you down as disagreeing with the trade. Have a great day.

Not bad but Simek or Vlasic could both be partners for Burns. Both have been ok in the past especially Simmer. I would be more interested in finding a good partner for Karlsson rather than Burns tbh because Karlsson hasn’t found one yet and he’s 100% not going anywhere anytime soon. I’m less sure of Burns’ longevity going forward.

As for expansion strategy with this, leave Burns exposed. They could even take Simek (4-year deal wtff) but they'll likely take one of Gambrell True or Gregor, for two will be available. Unless a forward gets traded. Honestly, leave Kane and/or Cooch exposed, doubt they take the contracts.
