Hawks Should Claim Johnson

Created by: Wadejos123
Team: 2020-21 Chicago Blackhawks
Initial Creation Date: Jan. 11, 2021
Published: Jan. 11, 2021
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
Play him in the top 6 then deal him with retention for assets at the TDL. Hawks could retain to make his contract appealing, and his numbers should be good playing in the top 6 and PP, possibly even along side Kane at some point. He could play center or fill the massive void at RW behind Kane

I wouldn't do it tbh. Let him still be on the books as Tampa gets desperate once again next offseason. No one should take that risky contract for free.

Do you really wanna retain salary on johnson for 4 seasons? If his contract was a couple years shorter this would be a great idea.

and what happens if Toews isnt out for the full year, thats going to be a mid season major cap maneuver to active him off the LTIR, and as soon as hes healthy he has to be activated you cant wait and keep him on there

Chicago would be smarter in claiming Derek Ryan.

He has 1 year left, can play 3c and they can get value for him at the deadline by retaining half his salary

Do you really think Julian Breasbois isn’t going to figure something out the lightning have the best management team in the league and they’re constantly going to conference finals for a reason

The way I see there's not gonna be much use for the money during the rebuild anyways. If we could gather a 2nd rounder for its it definetly worth it imo. You could even run the lines as:
    Kubalik-Johnson-Kane
    Debrincat-Strome-Shaw

which would almost guarentee johnson puts up big point totals

Even for Seattle it'd be bad to pick him without getting a +

hawks need to suck to get better draft picks.
they don't need guys that will "help" them finish outside of the top 10 draft spots

It's 4 years at $5M for Johnson's 30-34 age seasons. He's not that 72pt player one might remember from the 2015 SCF anymore. I don't view it as a flip at the deadline contract due to term since there'd be 3 more years left, even if they retain salary.

Besides, prior to Kucherov's surgery, rumor was TBL was shopping Johnson around offering a sweetener in the trade.

Ya for his full contract if you retain half he’s still a 40’point guy at 2.5 mil that’s pretty good

I agree, if the Blackhawks had traded for him, with TBL retaining half his salary, that's potentially a great deal and Bowman should have at least thought about it over the summer. I don't want to seem too harsh. He's still a good player.

If we're talking about the Blackhawks taking on his full salary, then either keeping at $5M per year for all 4 years or flipping him at the TDL and the Blackhawks retain half salary for him to be a 40pt player on another team for 3 more seasons in order to get a late first or a second, neither of those appeal to me, despite him being a good player.
