If there was no salary cap, this would be fine, and you'd love to see guys like this get paid. But there unfortunately is a salary cap, and that makes this an oof signing

Honestly, if this was one year, I might not mind it so much, since that fourth line is dynamite. But FOUR years? He'll be 35 by the end of this. It's debatable if he'll even have an NHL job by year two or three.

When Lou was with Leafs gave this guy a 4 year 2.5mill a year deal overpaying him, now with Islanders he repeats himself but this time at a mill less. This is all I can think of to this signing

I mean, he really wouldn't have accepted a 1 year deal at that price?

This should have been no more than a 2 year deal. Even $1.5 million is an overpay.

Lou is such an interesting gm. He can negotiate with kids like a champ... but seasoned vets he has some real doozies.

If he was still a leaf he would have got Matthews for 10 and Marner for 8. But then signed Tavares for 13...

Once again, the CapFriendly poll conundrum: when answering "Was this a good signing?", are we supposed to answer from the team's perspective or the player's?

This was a great signing from Martin's PoV. From the Islanders', and their fans, not so much.

He’s averaging 11.25 points per season over the last 4 seasons. He might be averaging more hits per game than points per month.

1.5 mil might be an overpay, but it's only 1.5 mil. But 4 years?

The one question I have is...why? Why would you keep giving money to Matt Martin?

Not loving the term, like everyone else it seems. But he will be only 35 when it ends.
On the other hand, everyone here thinks its fine and dandy to give any moderately talented youngun 2-3M/year just because they got "20 goal potential". If you've watched any NYI games you could see Martins worth. He is an absolute beast out there. He has 3000 hits in less than 700 games. And they arent no "killing me softly" crap. Out of NHL all time leaders he awerages highest by a margin.
After he and Clutterbuck were through their shift agains their opponents, they most and likely felt it.
And dont give me some crap about hits not mattering thar much. Some players games turn to absolute crap after they've been hit hard once. They become scared, dump the puck fractions too quick, dont make that extra little play they normally would.
Guys like Martin make teams they play in better. There was a story about Samuel Morin trying to transition from defender to forward this offseason. He being a 6ft 6 guy.
Guess whose games he kept watching from video to try to become an imposing force out there? Yep. Matt Martin, because he is the best at what he does.

Is this the same guy that signed:

Marleau @ $6,300,000 x 3 years
Zaitsev @ $4,500,000 x 7 years
Martin @ $2,500,000 x 4 years

And offered Tavares $13,000,000 x 8 years? Interesting.

Meanwhile ... Matthews, Marner and Nylander are overpaid by about $2,000,000 combined and Dubas is ridiculed for years.

It's because he's happy to strong arm RFA's when they have no leverage.

Then gets bent over by disgruntled UFA's when the time comes (if they even stay).
