Bergevin at the trade deadline

Created by: Wreckless
Team: 2020-21 Montreal Canadiens
Initial Creation Date: Jan. 12, 2021
Published: Jan. 12, 2021
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Trades
1.
MTL
  1. Laine, Patrik
Additional Details:
Winnipeg will likely be stocking up with young assets if they're out of the playoff picture by the deadline. It's going to be tough sledding in the Canadian division.
WPG
  1. Byron, Paul
  2. Caufield, Cole [Reserve List]
  3. Poehling, Ryan
  4. Tatar, Tomas
  5. 2021 1st round pick (MTL)
Additional Details:
Tatar extended 3x$5mm.
Will help to partially replace the loss of Laine on the left side. He filled a similar ask here (where he partially replaced the loss of Pacioretty) and he's done admirably.
Poehling (2017 1st rounder), Caufield (2019 1st rounder) and a 2021 1st round pick.
Byron balances out the cap hit for both teams and also helps Winnipeg out at LW or RW. An extremely useful player up and down the lineup.
Is that package enough to get it done? Not sure. But it's hardly a slap in the face offer.
Not sure how many teams are willing to unload 3 key pieces from their prospect pool with the cap expected to stay flat for yours. Teams are going to need promising players on ELC now more than ever.
We could possibly also add one of our young D prospects to the mix. There is definitely a way this deal can get done.
2.
MTL
  1. Dubois, Pierre-Luc
Additional Details:
Dubois's presence at $5mm will set the right salary structure for the other Habs centers for the future.
CBJ
  1. Laine, Patrik
Additional Details:
Columbus wants a star. Jarmo will sign Laine to a massive contract.

Nothing in that offer that Winnipeg needs or wants so they say no.

If I'm cbj I'd take that MTL package instead of Laine

Jets are going to be ahead of the Habs at the deadline but even in the offseason this is still a no for me. Essentially any trade where you're giving up 4 or more pieces and getting 1 in return is super unlikely to occur as it's quantity for quality.

Jets biggest need is another top center to supplement Scheifele.

Columbus doesn't want to trade Dubois within the East unless they get an overpay.

…soooo I guess what I'm saying is, if Columbus is willing to give up Dubois for Laine, why wouldn't they just do that one-for-one with WPG? Why involve a middleman at all?

Exactly. It will happen next season so both teams can negotiate with each player for an extension.

I don't think Winnipeg is willing to pay Dubois what he's asking.
