Is it a overpayment? Sure, most definitely.

But for what he brings to the team, I suppose I'm more or less fine with it I guess.

It does make me wonder though.....

Expansion bate?

A good deal. Foligno is a premier third-liner and was one if our captain candidates. He is liked a lot in the locker room and can deliver a gritty grinding role with a bit of an offensive upside. Also he'll be just 32 when this contract expires. Let's just hope Seattle does not grab him.

Either that or another trade in the works. But would Seattle take the chance on Greenway anyway? I don’t get the timing here.

He is only 29 and one of the best defensive forwards in the league. IMO I'm fine with it

With Moose on the table? Not a chance. Before Foligno signed and it was just between Greenway, Soucy and one of the goalies? I'd say given what they're likely to pick up on the defensive side and how crappy their forward core is likely to look. I was pretty confident they'd take Greener.

Now.... ****!

If there's a trade in the works it would definitely make sense, though.

There could be the chance Zuccarello waives but still unlikely. I have to assume that a trade is on the horizon since that’s the most likely and Minnesota fans are NOT gonna like it. Maybe they’ve already made a deal with Seattle? Seems unlikely but that could also be a possibility.

The timing really gets me on this. There is no reason a handshake deal doesn’t make sense here.

Welp that answers the Expansion question at least. It's going to be an interesting Expansion draft after all.

Or possible trade scenarios now.

Why do we even believe Foligno would be at the top of Seattle's list when they can still choose from Green, Soucy or Kahkonen/Talbot?

Because he’s the best player of Greenway/Soucy/Talbot.

Whomever thought the interesting times ahead for the Wild and it's fanbase were done, are clearly idiots. Looks like the ride's just getting started.

At the very least, it's not dull!

I would say he's marginally better than Greenway, and I'm not convinced he's better than Soucy. #4D gets taken over bottom six winger every day. Especially taking age into account. And Greenway's age and upside gives Seattle even more reason to take Greenway over Foligno.

My guess would be he still opts for 8-1, protects the 4 dmen, JEE & Fiala, and gives a pick in order for them to not take Foligno, which would not be a hefty price considering the difference between Foligno & Soucy/Greenway is not drastic

All fair points but now it’s going to cost something else to get them to take Greener or Soucy. The only *issue* with the signing is that it added more uncertainty to the expansion draft. Uncertainty is not good.

I don’t disagree, the signing just forces them to add that cost. Perhaps Foligno said do it before the season or I walk? Doesn’t sound right but who knows.

It's not going to take anything else. Seattle already could have taken Foligno if they wanted to, and they could have given him whatever contract they agreed to.

I don't see where the uncertainty is. They're still protecting 4 and 4. Signing Marcus Foligno to an extension doesn't change the likelihood of Dumba being moved.

Yeah, that’s not how UFAs and the expansion draft work. If they are signed, they need to be protected or they can be picked. Had he been unsigned, he would have been free to sign in FA had he wanted to. Being unsigned allows him to retain his right to test the market.

As for not making a Dumba trade more likely, it’s the one way to protect Foligno the Wild have that they have control over. How much more likely? IDK, but it is more likely.

As a pending UFA, Seattle would have been free to negotiate a contract with Foligno before UFA opens up. If Foligno agrees and signs, he counts as their pick. If not, he can still go to UFA. If Seattle wanted to take Foligno, and Foligno was fine with going to Seattle, they could have taken him.

Trading Dumba to protect Foligno is about the stupidest thing Guerin could do. He's (hopefully) not going to sell Dumba for less value just to protect Foligno. So no, this move doesn't make a Dumba trade more likely.

Not a bad contract, maybe a bit of an overpayment. But he brings a lot of intangibles to the table,

I’m 100% in approval of this signing...however, it’s just another glaring and painful reminder of how @-ing stupid signing Zuccarello was!
