At barely 1m$, it's extremely good value, no matter where they play him.

Some decent defensive depth for Vancouver on the right side. Schmidt, Myers, Hamonic. Not bad. Certainly better than last year's side of Tanev, Myers, and Stecher.

I can't believe people laugh at Benning's offseason.

Sure I am a canuck fan, but my posts on this website show that I am also a hockey fan... Benning had a fantastic offseason: He learned from his past mistakes. He didn't extend anyone unnecessarily. He wasn't too loyal to any specific player (This is a CRUCIAL error that most successful teams have - keeping the gang around often kills franchises)... and waited everyone out to get two top four defensemen both cheap on the cap and the wallet.

Forget losing Markstrom. Forget Toffoli.... this vancouver team is better on paper for this season opener than they were for the year prior. Now the question it only looks that way on paper.

Benning had a good off-season. I do think that Vancouver's slightly worse this year than last, but that's not because the moves that he made weren't smart. It's just that I think that losing Markstrom and Toffoli is going to hurt them short-term. It made room for Hughes and Pettersson later on, and prevented a cap crisis. They were good moves.

Might I remind you that Toffoli had absolutely no bearing on the success of the team. A handful of games after a trade where he only contributed modestly (not enough to say that he caused the team to make the playoffs), and then he was hurt for all of the playoffs, where his impact only won the team one single game.

All of the outside fans seem to think Toffoli is such a huge detriment / loss to the roster - but in reality the team did what it did without him. Losing him is harmless and won't be noticed.

The fallback of markstrom is easily forgotten in the drastically improved defense.

Your other two points (signing room / cap crisis) are valid and true.

Good deal, but I think giving him a full NMC may be a bit too much.

Interesting switch in the off season between Calgary and Vancouver. Calgary's signs a Vancouver UFA Tanev at 4.5m X 4 and Vancouver signs Calgary's UFA Hamonic at 1.25m X 1. Gotta think Vancouver won the "value" contract this season and in the future.

Good signing.

Not sure who is better between him and Tanev, but Tanev tends to frequent the injured list. Not penning them to long term anchors is the best interests for Vancouver.

VAN is getting absolutely no love from media (or fans). They were a whisker away from the conf. final. I think they've actually improved, contrary to popular opinion.

Yea I agree, Benning did well. I'm not a Canucks fan, but they are one of my favorite teams. Can't wait to see what they do this year.

This is an incredible contract, no two ways about it. Before the bubble people figured he'd get 4ish for term. He's a second pairing defensive right side D man. He's not a stud, but he's a valuable defender who just got signed for under 1.5 mil with no term commitment. Excellent move
