Buffalo would win as Matthews is far and beyond better than eichel
Matthews is improving his game year after year, was one goal away from 3 way tying the Richard trophy with Pasta and Ovie
Heck hes gotten so good defensively Keefe is giving him the opportunity to penalty kill get good at that and Matthews will be one of the best 2-way centers in the NHL

Leafs will keep the better player. Elite players aren’t traded to save a little money. Ask oiler fans if they’d trade McDavid for pasta or even MacKinnon who make half the salary. The leafs can’t do anything with the extra 1.5 mil that makes it worth it.
Leafs, Eichels contract is less and it's more a couple more years
true but when matthews contract is up hes not really gonna make much more, nobody rn is worth more than Mcdavid and it will be a long time before we see anything higher than a cap hit of 12.5mill
Eichel wont finish his contract in Buffalo I see him gone in 2 years

right, but think about this? Say Matthews gets traded for Eichel and leaves Buffalo when his contract is up? At least Buffalo could trade Eichel (even if he wanted to leave anyways) for a crazy amount of assets; or, because it's Buffalo, a bad prospect and a late 1st
Even if he is (and just barely if at all) Matthews is paid more and has less term so Eichel's contract technically has more value.
You know over the last year or so I've read on this very site about players should be getting paid their worth and then Matthews signs his contract amid a crazy streak of goal scoring and now it's suddenly a bad contract.
I have a feeling that because he's a Leafs player, people like to just be sour about this organization signing a top player in the league and less to do with the player's skills.

There are zero issues with how much he is paid, it is perfectly reasonable. The issue is the term, zero reason he didnt get 8 years like Eichel, McDavid, and Draisaitl. If he's not getting full term there should have been a team friendly discount like we've seen plenty of times with players like Kane, Toews, Stamkos, Bergeron, Barkov, and Gaudreau.

Been saying this for a while. Matthews and marner got 8 year money and that’s the biggest issues with the Iit contracts.
As for who wins? Both lose. Leafs need a goal scoring c, sabres need the more traditional c who will pass more. So both players suit their team.
Matthews contracts much worse and not worth the difference between them.
It's funny when someone says that a contract is much worse, when you've got two very talented players making what they should be making. Much worse? He gets paid $1.63 mil more than him. It's not like one is making $11.63 mil/year and the other is making $5. He's also currently on pace as one of the top 10 goals per game players of all time. Will that happen? Who knows.
1 for 1 is completely fair, anyone who says otherwise is being biased
That is a bias answer. Matthews has scored the most 5v5 goals in the world since he entered the league. He has scored more goals and points than Eichel in the same age years and is better defensively. They are not even, this isn't a bias answer it's just a fact.

And a team couldn't trade Matthews for a boat load of assets? What point are you trying to make here?

Kane and Toews are in no way on team friendly deals. You are judging these deals in a vacuum. Barkov signed his deal before he really broke out. Bergeron and Stamkos were signing their likely last contracts and Gaudreau was another who signed long term before really flourishing. Matthews will be getting paid his big money over his best years not the twilight of his career. That is just a poor statement.
