The forward lines are exactly what they should be. I am literally yelling at keefe through my TV. Thornton can’t skate and doesn’t backcheck.

Seems reasonable yeah I'd just swap Mikh with Hyman and yeah it's been pretty tough to watch Thornton so far it seems age is really catching up

Odd that you would sit Holl when Bogosian has been the biggest problem on defense.

Nylander has been GREAT.
Simmer has actually looked very good by my eye.

I have been saying this since TOR signed him, and like every single TOR fan has claimed otherwise.

And I am left to ask now, WTF at the end of OT does Thornton have 17:30 of ice time, and Nylander 17:38 and JT 18:49?
It doesn't even make any sense when AM and MM are at 24+
At least they realize Spezza and Simmond have no business on the ice at all.

The defense is not improved.

You can't even deny Nylander was dominant in that one. I'll even admit that Anderson looked good too.

I really don't wanna move that 3rd line around though I loved it. Also don't think Vesey earned a demotion. Only really bad thing was the too many men but he made up for it with a goal

Thornton will not get as much ice time as the season goes on. Looked pretty out of place on the first line and towards the end was being swapped with Hyman.

Most of the goals against Toronto tonight were on Andersen. Defense looked much better than last year.

by the end of 3 Thornton had more ice time than Nylander. That's all I'm gonna say.
The defense looked no better. Your critique is a bit bias.

Defense always looks rough for every team at the start of the season though. Every game ends up pretty high scoring early on. Its definitely something that needs to improve from this game but to call it as bad as the end of last season would still be an upgrade.

I honestly think it is what it is. Yeah guys do come in a little rusty now etc.... but it's just from a talent prospective. They don't have but 3 guys back there with any. That can't be.
Given they don't get much help from the bottom 6 to help them and it just doesn't add up. They had 4 guys on the ice in the forwards today that were just not very helpful in any aspect of the game.
You add that with 3 bad defense and a goalie who looks to be continuing a shaky year and it's hard to call this teams defense any better, or say it will improve. If you know you got a weakness in the defense you got to at least try to help them out somehow, but they got slower and worse in the bottom 6 so it just magnifies the issues there. This team made fundamental mistakes in the offseason. While every other team is out there looking to get younger and faster they bring in 2 guys over the age of 38. It's not hard to see why that's gonna fail. Then bring in a guy like Simmonds who is done and Barabanov, I'm not sure he's even NHL quality. They gave him 4 minutes of ice time so it is what it is.
It's one game. But every team is just at 1 game too. Short seasons are gonna be defined in the first 20.

Are you guys concerned about Marner? He just doesn’t look engaged out there. Seemed like he was trying to shy away from the puck every time he was on the ice.

Yeah he didn’t make any real errors but didn’t do anything special either. Overall a bland game.

I'm wondering who you think the '3 bad defensemen' are because I have a feeling you are talking about Holl out despite him being our best defensive dman tonight. Other than that our 3rd line held their own and outchanced the opposition. You were talking about bias earlier but the numbers are pretty clear on whos speaking from a biased perspective.

I've been concerned about his decision making for awhile now, but if they keep him with Mats and Hyms I think it'll be fine.

You liked Holl tonight huh? I personally didn't think he played all that well. Liked Brodie a lot except for that one play.

He had better results than Muzzin, he spent more time on the ice at even strength than Muzzin, etc. Holl doesn't do things to stand out but he's always controlling play well when he is on and thats what he did again tonight.
