Description
TEAM NOTES
- Sabres play looked slow and sloppy for most of the game, they got quite a bit better in the 3rd I thought though.
- Rieder - Eakin - Cozens actually looked pretty good
- McCabe - Ristolainen... They need to never play with each other again

PLAYER NOTES
- Hall Looked really good, He was speedy, he was smart, I really enjoyed watching him play (1G 1A)
- Eichel looked a very slow at the start of that game however did get quicker as the game went along but still didn't standout (2A)
- Thompson didn't do a whole lot but what I saw he wasn't that bad on that 1st line however there just seemed to be a couple moments where his play wasnt really that smart, Overall not bad though. (1A)
- Olofsson honestly looked like there best or 2nd best player in my opinion, He was pretty sharp tonight and his decision making was solid not much to complain about on the Olofsson side for me (1G 1A)
- Staal in my opinion looked slow and really not into the game at all. He looked very tired throughout the game and even was the main cause of the 5th Washington goal, He then latter went down to injury, took a hit to the mouth and did not return
- Reinhart had decent speed going and was trying to win some 50 50 battles he looked decent if you ask me but didn't standout (1A)
- Rieder was really enjoyable to watch imo, He was decently strong on the puck and made a couple good plays including getting a goal (1G)
- Eakin wasn't terrible either he held his own and looks pretty good, I'm still personally not a huge fan over the signing but he had a decent 1st game
- Cozens honestly looked ready in my opinion, he was pretty strong on the puck (had possesion of it a lot) and didn't look completely out matched when it came to physicality, He even got an assist! (1A)
- Skinner wasnt bad had a flash or too of speed but nothing to much unfortunatly
- Lazar did some decent forchecking but other than that I didn't notice him too much.
- Sheahan was really speedy last night it was actually pretty enjoyable to watch him skate around
- McCabe had a nice shot which converted into a goal and made a smart fight which took Dillon off the ice for the last 4:30 (1G 1A)
- Ristolainen had a pretty fancy kick save to keep a puck in the offensive zone on the PP and a couple nice checks on Ovi, Other than that he was invisible (But hey he was plus 1)
- Dahling looked very poor this game as if he didn't want to be there, His passes were sloppy, took a lazy penalty, just looked slow in general
- Montour made a couple weak defensive zone and offensive zone plays but also made a couple stronger offensive zone plays
- Miller hit the post right after the caps scored there 5th he wasn't that bad though
- Jokiharju honestly looked like one of there better defensemen last night in my opinion, though he didnt do anything stand out he still did better at his base job then I think people will give him credit for
- Hutton made some really big saves last night and deffintly looked better compared to last year, However It still wasn't good enough yet which raises concern (ik his SV% wasnt very good but im not gonna base it all off of that)

Overall: The game looked very poor in the 1st and got better as it went along for sure, most of these guys are playing there 1st game in 10 months and are trying to shake off the rust, Its somewhat understandable that they were weaker at the start of the game.

My predictions for lines tonight vs WSH you can see below.

Why scratch Staal? If hes hurt, if hes not hurt then keep him in the lineup
Who replaces Staal? Asplund or Mittelstadt
Unfrotunatly I think they keep McCabe Risto

These are just my thoughts and what I saw, feel free to leave your own opinions of the game of course!

Dahlin looked bad and slow, but he played 25 minutes and was first in Buffalo in ice-time, perhaps his record. Of course, I would not draw serious conclusions on one game, let's see how they play next. Staal really didn't impress.

If sabres are sellers, hall will bring in quite a nice package of futures

He didn't let a goal go in when he was on the ice, so there is some positives

This off-season was probably one of the best in recent years imo.

Good on you for sharing your observations of the game.

Players who impressed me were Reinhart, Cozens, Rieder, and Miller. Reinhart was the only Sabre who slowed the game down in the O-zone and that ended up leading to 2 of the Sabres' goals. Cozens looked solid, which is all you can ask of a guy in his 1st game. He was quick, forechecking well, and even went into the corner with guys like Chara and Dillon without a 2nd thought. Saw him chirping Chara in front of the net too which was good to see. Rieder played well, worked hard, and got rewarded. Miller was the only competent defenseman on both ends of the ice for us yesterday. Joki was good defensively but did nothing in the O-zone.

Players who did not impress me were Eichel, Staal, Sheahan, and Dahlin. We all have high expectations of Eichel and he made some good plays but he wasn't skating nearly enough and he wasn't shooting either. Of course we know about the error Staal made out there, but he looked slow and didn't seem himself. Sheahan was invisible for the majority of the game, although he did have a good PK game. Dahlin played a ton but did not play well at all. Slow, careless with the puck, and lazy. Hopefully he will turn that around tonight.

The rest of the team neither impressed me or unimpressed me.

From the comments.
Hall agreed
Eichel agreed
Thompson see below, played well enough to keep his spot on the top line, I thought he played as well as Cozens.
Olofsson he played well certainly one of the better players
Staal now we know why Guerin was willing to take Johansson for him. Not picking Derek Ryan off of waivers looks like an oversight.
Reinhart didn't standout (1A)
Rieder agreed
Eakin nothing impressive IMO
Cozens agreed
Skinner who is he going to pass to or who will get him the puck. He was a one man show on that line. He did fine.
Lazar agreed, but he will not score much
Sheahan I really did not notice him much.
McCabe agreed
Ristolainen he was plus 1, the only plus player. I know everyone likes to down play this stat but it really did stand out did it not.
Dahling he made some good moves but could not finish any of them
Montour agreed
Miller no one played VERY well
Jokiharju IMHO again, when a defenseman is not being noticed that is probably a good thing.
Hutton, He let out too many rebounds. I can only think of 5 times that he handled the puck cleanly. I hope he is just rusty. I really cannot think of any BIG save he made. 5 goals on 27 cannot be blamed on the defensemen or forwards completely.

Hard to tell from one game.
6 GA pretty much takes a team effort, but they only gave up 28 shots, 3 fewer than they averaged per game last year.
Taylor and Jack had some decent moments, while IMHO Tage played well enough to stay on the top line at least one more .
