Nylander more valuble than you think

Created by: LGuy54
Team: 2020-21 Toronto Maple Leafs
Initial Creation Date: Jan. 15, 2021

Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
William Nylander is a great player and he is much more valuble than you think

-He is a consistent 25-35 goal scorer (Comparable: Brock Boeser)
-Plays a peanlty-free game
My only concerns are that his defensive game is terrible and he is a puck hog.

1. This should be in the forums, it’s useless as an Armchair GM team.
2. Why is everyone so obsessed with “trade value”? Nylander isn’t getting traded, so it doesn’t matter what his “value” is.

1) He's not a puck hog..
2) He produces more than Boeser.
3) He's not a defensive liability. Not exactly Mark Stone but he's not brutal.
4) He's a possession god.
5) He's not a physical hitter but he's solid in front of the net and everything you want in a skill winger.
6) See Kotkatniemi15's post.

This guy gets it. Nylander is one of if not the best cycle player in TO and you literally can't ever cycle the puck if you are soft.

He can get puck watching a bit in the dzone, but solid transition play is part of defending, and he's elite in transition.

He's not a puckhog, he's the playmaker and best transition player. I'd rather the puck on his stick than Vesey.

I’m extremely hard on Nylander. He had a good game the other night. I hope it continues. I just wish he would do two things...
1) get his darn stick on the ice. (Watch Tavares, there’s a reason he gets lots of fluke goals) 2) keep his head in the game. He always seems to drift off and lose interest. But man when he is in it he is great.

Watch him spin off defenders, out skate them and very often steal the puck in the offensive zone by going to the hard areas. He just doesn't hit and he is so smooth that people don't see how hard he works. He looks like he's crusing because he makes it look so easy.

He has improved with his stick on the ice and going to the net which is so good to see. As for keeping his head in the game, Keefe mentioned it's been a an area of blunt discussion between the two. When he is on, he's every bit as dangerous as anyone else and if he learns to keep that up for 60 minutes a game over a whole season, he absolutely could push for 40 goals and 90+ points and even more. He certainly has the skill for it.

Agreed.

I think he still has a lot of centre in him. I'm not saying he'd be a great C, but he gets drifting in the slot/net front of the Dzone sometimes, which can make it tough for his teammates to go cover up.

If he ever dials that focus up to 95%, he'll be even more fun to watch. That's why I like him pairing with Tavares, I think Tavares' work ethic started rubbing off on Nylander last year, he was definitely more engaged. So hopefully that continues.

I think it also has a lot to do with getting older, it's easier to see he end is coming the older you get. That creates a sense of urgency

Probably but he doesn't do it as much since he's the centre, he often is hanging around the half boards and the slot area. JT is really good as well but no one seems to notice Nylander in the dirty areas, usually because when he goes in their he spins off a defender so fast and is in the clear it's over.
