Initial Creation Date: Jan. 18, 2021
Published: Jan. 18, 2021
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
Run a rotation on the 3rd pair D until you find what works best, try Lehtonen with Dermott, try Holl with Dermott and Sandin with Muzzin, try Dermott with Muzzin and Holl with Sandin or Holl with Lehtonen.

If none of that looks satisfactory, then consider bringing someone in.

This is what I would try first (also Hyman needs to be in the top 6, doesn't matter which line, swap him with Joe or with Vesey) Haven't loved Joe on the top line, haven't hated it.

I don't understand why they would send Spezza to the taxi squad. His faceoff skills alone justify his presence in the lineup

But Holl and Muzzin has been really good? Don't fix what isn't broken. Just get Bogosian out of there.

Agreed. And honestly he produces some offense just about every night in his limited role. There's always atleast one shift a game where Spezza's line looks dangerous. It's been that way ever since he got here. If it were up to me I'd give Spezza a couple shifts on the third line with Kerfoot and Mikheyev once in awhile. I still like Spezza's game. I'd like to see him in the 10-12 minute range not the 6-8.

It's been acceptable yeah, but who's to say Dermott Muzzin wouldn't be a great pair? I think it's worth trying atleast 1 game. Plus gives you an idea what the team looks like if injuries were to happen. I think it's a good idea to try line mixing before playoffs. Figure out what's best, and maybe Muzzin/Holl is what's best.

Holl clearly has a lack of skills. Muzzin drives this pair like crazy. The best way to use Holl's skills would be to use him as a number 5-6

Agreed. Only reason he is there is because the Leafs have no one better. Holl is a perfect 6th dman. Would like to see them try other players with Muzzin just to see. I think an offensive guy like Sandin could compliment Muzzin really well.

Same, 10 000% agreed. Sandin isn't a defensive liability like a certain Barrie so that would help

Holl has been really good. He's been one of our best players so far this season. He gets no love for being just steady.

That is nonsense, Holl compliments Muzzin very well. Both are big, Holl is a much better skater and he makes a fine first pass. He does nothing wrong and does a lot right but still gets no love.

I don't have a problem with Holl there. Like I said, that might be the best option the Leafs have, but hard to know the answer to that without trying anything else.

Well why not think of it this way, have any of the guys you listed blown the doors off on the 3rd pair? Until they do, Holl has earned his spot.

Sorry but being put at a place (in his case the 2nd pair) because of the tremendous weakness of the team's blueline is hardly «earning his spot».

Earning a spot is what Adam Fox did in NYR last season, which was consistently bring the team's best d-man in all circumstances.

Most of them haven't even gotten a chance to play this year tears of joy they haven't given any of Lehtonen, Sandin, Liljgren a chance. So how do you know?

Fox is better though, and comparing Holl to Fox is ridiculous. Holl moved his way up to work with Muzzin and was very good with him.

That's a bad mentality. "What we have is good so lets not try anything new". What if you went from Muzzin Holl being an 8/10 pairing, to trying something else and maybe discovering a 9/10 pairing? Just because you like what is current doesn't mean "end of story". There's likely better options.

Well let's give Liljegren and Sandin, Rielly's minutes just in case they are better. That is exactly what you are doing here with Holl. Someone has to force him out not give some an opportunity over him because you think he may not be the best.
