Why would you give Holl away for nothing? This team has 0 insurance D. one injury and who fills the spot? Lyubushkin? No thanks. Keep Holl.

Also what do u think about LIljegren? He hasn't shown crazy progression in the past calendar year, that worries me a bit not gonna lie. 2017 draft is gonna be 4 years away in just 6-7 months ish

Yeah Liljgren is not making the team IMO. Sandin will.

I am not confident in Liljgren becoming an NHL caliber defenseman. Hopefully he proves me wrong, but I haven't seen him in an NHL game look good yet. Sandin has shown flashes that give me more confidence in his future.

I don't think Liljegren ever makes it, and the clock is certainly ticking on Sandin as well, both are finishing their ELC without much of a cup of coffee in the NHL.

Overall the defense is just average and the team defense is poor. There will be tons of 4-5, 5-4 games this year, same as last year. I really like the Brodie signing, but overall the defense is average at best. Muzzin, Reilly, Brodie are a solid top 3.

Bogosian was pretty much washed up and out of the NHL before the Lightning made him look so good. Hes physical, which is needed, but is more of a remnant of the NHL of the 90s. Hes a 7th dman and should only get 25 games or so this year.
Dermott and Holl are solid, but will offer just average defense and below average offense. Ideally they would be a nice 3rd pairing, nothing spectacular, but getting 12-15 minutes a night.
Lehtonen after camp is obviously not viewed as well as Dermott. It could be that hes a more offensive option, (but then offense isn't the issue, defenders who defend are). But as I've said before, I think hes a Mevedev (a very similar Russian dman Philly brought in 7-8 yrs ago, who didn't look bad, but didn't look good either and lasted just one season).

Overall the defense is missing a solid minute eating and possibly offensively adept RD on their 2nd pairing. But their defense is magnified by the fact the forwards don't back check or play sound positional team defense.

but what you dont understand is defencemen (and goalies) take longer to reach the nhl than forwards

Oh I get it, but in Toronto's case you haven't seen a deep and solid defense that couldn't have used an ELC rookie to play on it. Theres been some solid vets to learn from, yet TMLF haven't called them up or developed them to take a full time spot, other than Dermott. When losing offensive dman Gardiner, they could've brought up either young guy, but instead are going with pretty average single yr fill-ins (bogosian, lehtonen, even dermott is on a yr contract). The team plays weak team defense, so why not add a young puck rusher. The way it stands now, both liljegren and sandin will finish their 3rd season under contract not in Toronto.

Certainly looking at Philly, who has 5 dmen (out of 7) under 27 yrs old, Myers, Hagg and Sanheim got 2-3 yrs in minors. Don't get me wrong, I just don't see Toronto making space for the young guys and their development stalling IMO.
